seeking advice on casting slugs

I have clean my mold with a toothbrush and soapwater after drying i have bake it in the oven for i think 30 or 40 minutes with 120 or 150 celsius

And this for 3 times before i have start to cast something

Never cool your hot mold with water , clean it just if its cooled out

If you cast some lead dont drop your hot bullets in a water bath, this hardened the soft lead.

I an give you only this basic tips to dont harm your mold from start or your barrel with too hard projectiles

I am a beginner in casting here are many other people with good experience

This one will have different opinions but here goes this is what I do (pouring lead sinkers ) My mold I blacking the inside with acetylene ( seems to help the castings to release better ) . My self I use a Lee melting pot ( comes in various sizes ) . First I put a 1x1 piece of paraffin ( what people put on there jam in glass jars when they make it ) in with the lead when I start to melt it This helps to bring the impurities to the top of the lead pot .If your temp. is to hot your molting lead will be blue on top turn down a little bit .I scrape the side of the pot with a small wood wedge to get the impurities off the side in which will float to the top - scrape off . I will preheat the mold before pouring & during the process let it cool down some while casting .(don't be in a hurry ) . Myself I wear welding gloves, long sleeve shirt , full face shield & a respirator . Remember if any water gets into the hot lead it will blow up into your face . Also I will put some oil on the hinges. Do not melt lead in a confined space . Best of luck Darell Remember safety first & keep the kids away .

Thanks for all the replies. Very useful info particularly on the harm lead vapour can do. This has never come across my mind.

BTW, I just found that there are non-contact type temperature meters available in the market capable of temperature measurement up to 580 degree Celcius. Cost is less than 10 bucks shipped to my location. Will it be useful in the process of casting ? e.g. to check the temperature of the molten lead and the mold ? At this stage I don't think I will invest in a Lee furnace .
