second gen FX Impact - upgrade or sell for FX Impact X?

Hey Guys,

Been a long time since I posted on here.

Just saw that they now sell the FX impact X.

Seems like the barrel and regulator are upgraded for the most part.

Was told by my local air rifle store that I could get maybe half what I paid for my mint FX impact if I sell.....

I think it would be best to upgrade the regulator and the barrel instead.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Hi Willyh,

Depends if you are having problems with your current FX Impact.

If you like it and want to keep it. Go for it. If you are doing it to "Resell", don't.

I had a First Gen, standard FX with Smoot Twist. I had it updated by FX when I needed "Seals" replaced due to a small leak. I had a Smooth Twist X extra Barrel, extra .22 Std smooth twist,Donny L . over $4,000. invested with all the bells and whistles.

I finally had to part it out as I couldn't get $2,500, asking price. The basic gun with reseal sold for $1,600., with all the parts sold, I cleared about $2,300.

If you FX Impact is in good shape, $1,400-1,600 is my best guess. Search FX Impacts under classifieds and you will see some selling history.

I would sell it and upgrade to what you would like to shoot next. I upgraded to a Daystate Redwolf .25. It's a very awesome airgun.

Good luck,

You can't upgrade just the regulator to the latest version now. The Impact model is on its third generation regulator, and it's 10mm in diameter vs gen 1&2 being at 9mm. To upgrade the regulator to gen 3, the trigger block has to be upgraded as well since the regulator housing is larger. I spoke to the service department at FX Airguns USA and they said they thought it was over $500 or more to do that (that wasn't a price quote, just what the tech remembered). Then add cost to upgrade to Smooth Twist X barrel system, and the upgrade costs start getting up there.

As for only getting half back when selling a used Impact, that sounds low to me. I may be wrong, because I haven't been specifically looking, but I haven't seen very many Impacts selling at a 50% loss. I've been of the impression that they hold value fairly well if well maintained and in very nice shape.

I chose to upgrade to the new X Barrel, but past that, I won't upgrade anything else. The newest regulators are a different size so can't be easily upgraded. Other upgrades are small, but build up over time. I guess the question you must ask yourself is, "What do you want to get from upgrading / trading the gun?" What do you want to accomplish?

My goal was to bring it up to date as much as I could easily. Therefore, only a barrel upgrade. It was a bit over $200. No caliber change, just a new barrel.

So, what do you want to accomplish?

Thanks. So the 14mm size will fit the second gen?

Huma now have a new 16mm piston so you should be good for either now. They had a one size fits all 15mm piston originally which wasn’t so good as a replacement for the 16mm piston and failed occasionally. Just check which piston you have before you order.

You may know already which regulator you have. My mate who thought his gun was a second gen Impact found for actually had the 14mm piston. Just depends when the gun was made.

I just want to get more range, accuracy and better air management.

Personally, I wouldn't change anything unless changing caliber from something like a .22 to 30 or .25 to 30. Here's why:

The range is what it is. The new guns don't add any range.

The accuracy difference, from what I can see, is negligible. If you want to move to a STX, you can do that for about $240 if I remember correctly, but accuracy will be minimally better if at all. That's what I did, and as soon as it quits snowing and warms a bit, I'll find out if it was a good investment or money down the drain.

Air management. That's a tricky one, but I haven't heard anyone say the newest version gets any more shots per fill, or the regulator holds any better. Don't think you will see any real difference there.

If you buy new, I think you'll just be disappointed in the lack of improvement. It's all incremental.

Rather than take a bath selling your current gun (AoA just sold a .30 Impact for $1400) and spending the bucks on a new Impact, why not expand and buy a Dreamline Classic when they become available in a different caliber? Get more guns, to have more fun?

Thanks man. That’s a great idea.
