Scope shimming

I just got a HW97k in .177. I installed a Hawke Airmax compact 4-16 in a Sportsmax Dampa one piece mount and first group at 15 yards was about 3" low. If I shim the bottom of the rear ring, about how much elevation would I gain, wanting to do this to more center the horizontal crosshair. I have never shimmed a scope before, the closest thing was using a set of Burris Signature rings with eccentric inserts to align a scope. The rifle was a nice custom mauser that someone had drilled and tapped and the holes were not aligned so the rear rings were off to one side a bit. My gunsmith corrected a base to bring the rings closer to parallel and the rings with the eccentric inserts finished the job,, although they could have done it alone.
