Scope ring lapping FX No Limit and Sportsmatch 30mm

Hello :)

Thought i'd test my Wheeler Scope Mounting kit on my mounts. Lapping the rings might not do anything for accuracy on my airguns, but its nice to know that the rings grip evenly on the scopes and that there is no uneven force/misalignment on the scope tube.

The FX No Limit rings needed allot of lapping/grinding before they would grip even. The Sportmatch was a little bit better. Both mounts was of center before grinding. After grinding they where spot on. Since both mounts have hight adjustment i leveld this of before grinding.

If you decide to do this, dont remove to much material.

Check often during grinding and dont get any grinding paste on/in the gun.

I have the same kit and did that once but couldn't tell if it made any practical difference. Maybe when you are tightening things up it easier to keep the clamping distance the same on both side of the rings.. Just don't know! Mine looked a lot like yours. Did it once on some rings that had the cloth strip on the inside of the ring ridge. oops! Isn't that cloth on the inside of the upper ring cover supposed to have that to make it so you don't have to lap the rings?? Another of those things I just don't know!

I agree 100% the wheeler kit is exact ,The bore bars are with in .0001

I have done about 1 dozen fx rings and one was soo out I had to use a drill (should of sent it back ) to get true

I have never tried sportsmatch , Here is what I found best and worst tolerances

BEST WORST

Seekings centerpoint

Steiner t series rings fx no limit

Spuhr BLK

Barrett 0 gap millett adj windage

Badger tasco

Barrett x ring

Ive always been curious about the process and assumed this was done on centerfires where the scope, it’s mounting system and rifle are more or less married. I know I’ll probably swap scopes between air guns and I’m curious if one removes the rings or shifts them on the mounting point doesn't that shift the position of (dual) rings relative to their original lapped position?

I forgot to mention it in my earilier post , The Wheeler kit comes with 320 grit is only good for mounts which are way to out of square to take off materal for alumiumn , you want to use like 600 grit and end off with a toothpaste then you get a very nice finish it will look like it was highly machined plus if you have a nice scope you dont want to mark it due to micro scratches , it will still clamp same I am saying so nothing gets marked and it looks better

Arvid,

If I sent you my two sets of rings how soon could you get them back to me? 😆

Nice work, do you have a before picture?

Smitty

I be glad to help you with that, but since i am living in Norway i guess it would be rather expensive by mail. Lapping a set of rings is about 30 minutes of hard work :)

Eager to get started i forgot to take pictures before i started working on my mounts. Between the FX and Sportsmatch, the FX mounts needed most lapping. They where quite far off .

This might be the case. But did not happen on my guns ( AA S510 and FX Crown). I have marked my mount so that they always will be a pair and facing the same direction on the gun (so that right on the mount is always on the right side of the gun). #1 at front and #2 at rear. Of course, if you have the Wheeler kit, you could/should check the alignment when swapping between guns. When lapping hight adjustable mount, you should lower them before grinding. As noted in the PM i sendt you, i did this mainly to protect my scope with an even grip on both mounts.
