scope comparisions goods vs cost

now i don't want to cause issues so i will not list exact prices for each- just cost versus each other. All these scopes are in certain criteria, and all have been reviewed by Joe. these scopes have all these in common. 1- FFP , 2- variable power , illuminated reticle , and 50 mm OL lets see how they stack up.

Tac vector taurus 3-18 x 50 FFP , IR , this is the cheapest of the group at low to mid 200's

discovery 3-18 x 50 FFP , IR , HD glass , this scope is about 120 more than the tac vector

falcon 3-18i x 50 FFP , IR this guy costs about 150 more than the tac vector

Aztec emerald 5.5-25 x 50 FFP , IR this scope costs about 300 more than the tac vector

now , to me , is the extra magnification on the aztec required? for me , no. i would much rather have it in 3-18 , but based on their pricing , it would cost same as 5.5-25. i have looked through the aztec 3-18 and found it good. but the price sorta kills it for me. i had a tac vector SFP and it was damn respectable for the price. can't bitch there.

the falcon scope is to me, awesome , i liked it so much i ordered a second one and sent it to joe. it was every bit as clear in the glass as the aztec and 160 cheaper! it was a no brainer for my purposes.

the discovery i have not seen yet it is one of discovery's highest end scopes , and is about same price as falcon. BUT , it has HD glass could this be the steal of this group? Possible.

Summary- to me , aztec has been priced out based on what is offered , not to say their scope is not real good , but is it that much better than the rest? no.

i personally do not think the tac vector taurus glass and track quality to be equal to the falcon , but it is also big time cheaper , and for the price , it produces great.

the falcon is a serious scope , that does not break the bank , it feels high end , but does not cost it.

the discovery- i will have to look into this one further but it could be the best of the group , i'm sure JWR will weigh in on this post and school my rookie butt!

What we don’t know about the scopes that are new to the market place is how long will the last . By this I mean, will the way they are sealed and filled with an inert gas that prevents internal moister condensation. The loss of the seal also lets in oxygen that is in the air to get into the scope and then oxidation can occur this can lead to etching of the glass components caused by the formation of acids that oxidation can create. You know this has happened when you see a scope that looses that crisp and bright view of target. I’m sure that Joe can pull some of his knowledge on how there are differences that matter in the mechanical aspects of the way scopes are constructed.

I personally own at least 1or 2 of each scope mentioned above and I’ve have had no problems that I am aware of but on the ones that doesn’t have US based repair facilities to take care of any problems I have to consider them to be throw away sand unrepairable . Remember we all know oring don’t last forever and I wonder if some manufacturers use lower quality rings in their scopes. Soft Rings can seal extremely well but they don’t last as long as harder ones and inversely harder rings will last but if the device they are in are not machined to tight tolerances they can’t function as intended.

I can only comment on Discovery - as I own two of their VT-T 6-24x50 scopes, and I absolutely Love them!
For years, I'd been using Nikon optics, but always looking for something that I enjoyed more.. These Discos fit the bill..
I sold off most of my Nikons, and hoped to get a bunch of Discos of the same model to outfit all of my rifles..
[I like to have the same make/model optics on all of my guns]
After getting two, I started seeing the scopes becoming out of stock at more and more places..
I used Amazon Prime, so best price, 2 day shipping, Warranty, etc.
I keep looking and looking and looking, and no one has these scopes in stock, Discos website lists em' out of stock, etc.
I've e-mailed reps from Discovery days and weeks ago and still no answers back.. That said - I'm far from thrilled.
The scopes are so nice that I figured the model would be around for years and years..
Instead, they're more illusive than BigFoot for some reason.. Not cool..

At this point, since I can't just grab a new one if/when needed, I'll probably be forced to sell the two that I have,
and find another company with a similar style/model - but one that will not continuously be out of stock
[Or worse yet - Discontinued?] No clue what's going on with that one.. Or any of their other models if that's how they do things..

*Shrug*

Sam, have you tried AirGuns Optics Plus (Charlie Sexton) as he carries the full line of Discos?

Hi Ranchibi,
Thanks for the suggestion! Actually, I did check out O.P. as a source, but unfortunately,
the price per lens is $40.00 more than I usually get them for.. If I only needed 1 lens, that wouldn't be a big deal, however,
my grand plan *was* to get one for each of my 6 rifles.. So that extra cost would be equal to the price of getting another scope..
I think at this point, I might be forced to come up with a plan-B.

Thank you again!

🙂

I haven't owned any of those mentioned, but I highly recommend the Athlon Ares BTR 2.5-15x50 FFP. It's more expensive but has the same features and excellent glass. Worth every penny IMHO.

jgburks , i have NO DOUBT that the athlon ares BTR would kick some serious ass but you are missing the point of this post. the aforementioned scopes of this post were presented to members to discuss alternatives to what some consider an expensive aztec scope ( 500+) dollars. i brought more budget friendly scopes to compare that range from $240-$ 380. and present how effective they are with similiar features that many shooters find desireable. now at $800 the ares BTR is to be considered with a different class of scopes for comparision. since it's more than TWICE the cost of the average scope in my original grouping.

I would be interested in a comparision of scopes with same features within the $600-$900 range down the road. thanks for the input.

Ares was on sale for $500 last few months

And like you say Falcon is

really good value for money

i hear you on that , but for purpose of comparison , i have to give reg list price. and yes , i was looking to give info on good scopes for very reasonable prices , hence the comparison. but thanks for the input friend.

Sam, very true about re-scoping 6! LOL! Amazon sells Apex/Horizon scopes...I JUST received one and the box is the EXACT same Disco box and only says...DISCOVERY on it FYI! Here it’s is 👍.
