Scope choice I hate mine

Here's a little diagram to show the problem of a shortdepth of field (DoF) — the shortness of the span where parallax and image sharpness are acceptable.

The DoF trade-offs are with the scope brightness and the magnification.... ➔ see the diagram. (The attached PDF is probably better quality than the image below.)

Edit: Improved version, thank you Mark! 👍🏼

Hello --

You could be limited by this method, but it works for me. Learned it back baby kine days. Set targets at closest and furthest anticipated ranges you will be working. Measure the difference and divide by 3. Set a third target one-third the distance into that range. Set max zoom and focus on that third target you set. Back the zoom out until all targets are in focus. DOF is mostly one-third in front of subject and two-thirds behind.

ATB, Mark

Hey Matthias! My pleasure share this out.

Hope this photo can clarify what I described other day. I hunt in the 20-40 yard ranges, with magnifications 5-6X, so set and forget with my scope is a help, no fiddling. I am using a USO TS-12 MHR FFP for demonstrating here.

Lucky USO provided an easy DOF 1/3's rule for me. Marked ranges are 15YD --> 25YD --> 50YD.

fixed parallax LVPOs might be a good option for the OP, and there are now some decent options for $3-600 that may work.

Is that my favorite conspiracy realist from SH? Welcome bro!

thanks mang! i did the "buy once, cry once" and jumped in. airguns are so awesome now, lol. ear friendly home protection if you're desperate.

unfortunately, now that i have a cf fill tank and free refills, i might end up with more than one pcp gun.

Well cool, keep us posted on your airgun journey!
