Protect yourself from SCUMBAG SCAMMERS

Hi everyone,

A week ago I was scammed by someone on this site and would like to offer a little advice so that you aren't taken advantage of too.

On an almost daily basis, for over 6 months now, I have searched for a Delta Stryker scope in the classified. On two of those days, I replied a little too late and lost out to another member. I have been so eager to acquire this scope that I told myself that if the opportunity came, I was going to "take it" before anyone else could beat me to it. Otherwise, I was going to bite the bullet, and buy brand new as a Christmas gift to my company (I pest for a living).

As it turned out, that strategy ended up biting me in the ass. 11 days ago I sent $1000 to a forum member that goes by "DRELL". I was so eager to get this item that I didn't do my research on the seller and lost all my money. Both PayPay and my bank said they couldn't help me. I thought that it was a safe transaction because I was buying through PayPal and if there was a problem, my bank would back me up. Boy, was I wrong!!!!

These are the things that I overlooked.

1. Check the sellers bio and history. When I saw the reused photos, I assumed that they bought it from the same member that was selling the scope last time I looked.

2. Do not send money through PayPal Friends & Family. You will not be protected. I thought that I was protected. If I had known, I would have not made the purchase.

3. Ask that they accept Paypal and pay the extra 3.5%. If they are not willing to do that, they may be trying to scam you.

4. Ask for a picture of item with proof of todays date, or with their member name written next to it. Don't just accept the pictures as credible or as their's. DRELL (the scammer) used picture from the previous sale. I have seen this done before as its easier than uploading a bunch of pictures yourself. But if they aren't willing, watch out.

5. As double protection, use a credit card company that you trust to protect you. I used my debit card from Bank of America (because I thought that I would be protected). I should have used American Express. America Express has protected me from fraud before. FYI- I will not use BOA again. This is the second time that they have not protected me. I will bank with someone who has me in their best interest. I plan to close all BOA accounts quite soon. (Thanks STO)

6. Always assume that you are being scammed and take every level of protection seriously.

Good luck to all. I hope that I have raised your level of awareness and you don't suffer the same fate as I did. Trust me, I feel as stupid as they come. This has been a very hard and costly lesson to learn.

I have asked two times for $2000 firearms. I asked for a picture with them in it with the item and their drivers license. Both were happy to comply and I sent a pic of me with the license in the request. Worked for me. HAVE used a phone call several times and asked questions about the item, this was other types of items. I know this doesn't help you SORRY but maybe others. I have also used for air gun stuff the info on each member, first post hmmmm, years a member or 100's of posts clears the air(pun intended).

Thank you for warning us all it is very much appreciated. I too am very sorry this happened. 😒

This is why I made the post recently about the zero post members thingy ( yes I know we all started with no post we just need to be very careful that's all ) . I was trying to inquire if it was a regular occurrence to avoid just such a situation with any of us getting scammed. Again I am Sorry. 😒

Sorry to hear you got scammed. The advice you're offering though is solid. I'd go one further and say not to bank with Bank of America. I've seen, on multiple occasions, them to refuse to protect THEIR OWN ACCOUNT HOLDER when the fraud was even more clear cut than in your case. If your own bank won't protect your money when it'd cost them nothing to do so, how can you trust them with your money at all?

I realize this is an unpopular opinion on this website, but in general I also avoid any seller who asks for a friends and family payment. At bare minimum it tells me they're an inexperience seller, and that they haven't read (or don't care about) paypal's rules/terms of service. Why? Because asking for an F&F transfer on a goods and services payment is a violation of paypal policy, and if you start getting a lot of F&F payments Paypal WILL notice and will put a stop to it. So it only works if you don't sell much, are on a new account, or are trying to run a scam. And all for what? Paypal only charges 2.9% plus 30 cents for goods and services payments. On a 2,000$ payment that is less than 60$. So what does that tell you? A lot of forums also specifically prohibit members from asking for F&F payments to protect the users on their website. Doing so may even deter some scammers, but at bare minimum it'll make it a little harder for them. So yeah, unpopular opinion and all, but in general I just avoid sellers who ask for F&F.

Using friends and family also voids any PayPal protection, as supposedly you are dealing with people that you know.

STO,

I completely agree with you. This is the second time that BOA has not protected me. I would like to pull all of our accounts from BOA but my wife has to be convinced and I am not ready to let her know that I was this stupid. Although the money was from my pesting business, I'm not ready to move forward just yet. I will in due time though.

Thanks for caring and for the additional info.

Slightly off topic, but, your thread also reminds me of the small % of members that are pretty active, YET, don’t let it be a Giveaway up in here, they come out of the woodworks in droves!!

So this may be worth precisely nothing, but I'd start by just going in and telling them you're closing the accounts you control. They hate it when this happens, and will do all kinds of things (including lie to you and claim that your account is closed when it actually isn't, and I know this because BOA did it to me..... TWICE) but stay firm and insist. I'm sure they'll ask you why, and you should flat out tell them why. They absolutely can file an ACH chargeback, they just won't, and that is why you're closing your accounts with them. There is ever so slight a possibility that you'll end up talking to someone with enough pull or with enough on the line that they'll actually reverse the transaction. You usually don't have much time to do it though.

Its not great advice, but it is all I've got I'm afraid. :(

Sorry to hear about your loss;I am glad you posted,we all can learn from it.I learned about PayPal friends and whoever, never thought they didn't back it .I would never use it anyhow because it is cheating in a way. and 3.5 % is not worth it.....I have over 1400 PayPal Transactions, never a problem..now BofA is a problem for sure.I hope you can get your money back...don't kick yourself too much and good luck .
