Gas rams may or may not be appropriate in the world today because seals and pressure areas in cocking over time show a simple springer with a real spring instead of "air" in a "bag" as a gas ram has is more consistent with LONGEVITY to keep shooting straight.

If you want a rifle that always always always shoots straight from the time of purchase until after 5000 rounds then use the spring or the SPRING coiled mechanism to be assured of CONSISTENT accuracy over years or even decades.

The gas ram is powerful and the Chinese and Koreans and Asians and other places in the world that know how to employ thousands to piece together a mimic Theoben are prolifically flooding the market and confusing all.

Price DOES make a difference and you DO get what YOU pay for!

Think ahead and get the best FROM THE START and then decide whether gas ram or spring piston is better for YOU.

To me the HW98 ENDS IT ALL!

I have the .177, .20, and .25 HW98 and they ALL end it for me and any frustration I have about accuracy is GONE! Time after time year after year atmosphere going winter summer spring and fall--the HW98 BEATS EVERY GAS RAM made TODAY.

If you can GET an OLD THEOBEN Eliminator that hasn't even been "broken" into after 2000 rounds THEN GET IT as your LAST and Final Gas Ram.

When Gas Ram becomes too much to cock or deal with shot after shot after shot and you wear out think again.

Get a rifle that never ever stops performing with manageable cocking to the system: A Springer HW98.

Anyone else here have an HW98 before they diss this statement of mine?

Well more wrong and bad info yet again (getting to be a pattern) as well as going off topic... yet again!) The Theoben Dual Magnum (36fpe) will easily exceed the power level of the Eliminator (30fpe). I know it's a Theoben but YOU stated "No Gas Ram is capable of Theoben 1999 Eliminator power is available anywhere." Some Hatsans (34fpe) are also more potent than the Eliminators so there's another example! Once again this is not a post about patents, Eli's vs RX, springs vs ram, longevity or the 98. If the 98 were an air rifle to "end it all" it would be chosen by many/most/all FT shooters which it's not and out winning big FT matches which again it's not. Good rifle but easily improved upon by gliding, de-burring, etc. To answer the question of do I own one, no I own 3! I improved each one by methods mentioned above. Please stop passing along bad and or flat out wrong information someone may actually believe some of it. Most of all please stop mentioning the same rifles when they have absolutely no bearing on the OP. Try to stay on topic as the OP has already mentioned why this topic was started and what it's about.

no bearing I heard but I would not use a gas ram to make accurate 10 or 20 or 50 shot groups.

That is the point. I can cock one of my HW98s and know where the pellet is going before I fire and when I fire it goes there better than your gas rams or my own Theoben at 705 fps using Kodiaks.

Yes that Eliminator still works to this day and I still don't USE it to make accuracy or groups when I have a .25 HW98 on hand.

Power is not necessary. Gas Rams are not necessary. Gas Rams deteriorate in use just like a "spring" inside an HW anything that lots of folks think they need to replace to upgrade or rather DEGRADE their rifles with a compression spring and new "vortex" kit or some other dumb addition to a perfect rifle.

All of my HWs are perfect performers from HW30 to HW98. And the HW80s in .22, .20, .177, and .25.

I have these rifles and I NEVER altered them. I just took them ALL outside and started sighting them in at 25 yards OFFHAND to get groups. I shoot OFFHAND ONLY. NO BENCH NO REST NO LEANING NO FAKING in the rifle shot.

The HW98s are THE BEST OFFHAND performing rifles in my inventory bar none.

The D54 .20 Hector Special is easily the most sophisticated arrangement of scope mount (Diana Zero Recoil Second Generation no longer available) rings and gun.

The D54 will end anyone's quest for 105 yard pellet shooting.

The HW98 will end most of everyone else's ability to shoot offhand without rests to HIT the target as far as 50 yards.

Why should I be explaining this to you when you never had a sidelever like a D54 tuned in .20 caliber? That is my rifle that can reach out to 105 yards to kill the target--not just tap it.

Once again off the OP's question and bad info. How would you possibly know what I own or their capabilities?! All of a sudden gas rams are something you DON'T advocate when you have mentioned repeatedly about the Eliminator and its praises and power!! All of a sudden after making false claims of its unrivaled power, power is not necessary? Power now has nothing to do with "my rifle that can reach out to 105 yards to kill the target–not just tap it."??? Also stated you don't tune, but Vortek (not vortex, another mistake) or some other "dumb addition" to a "perfect rifle" can't/won't improve it and is some how DEGRADING it!? Completely laughable to call a 98 perfect or to think they can not be improved upon. This goes to show lack of mechanic knowledge and airguns. There is hardly a thing on this planet that's mechanical that can not be improved, once again opinion over actual facts. Offhand shooting is not the only method so why think it's somehow better/best or even necessary, again opinion over facts. People have to right to choose their shooing method be it convenience, ability, physical impairments or simply feel like doing. In fact some ranges do not allow shooting from the standing position! An offhand shooter is no better a person than those that choose to do it differently. You get no more points in a match if you hit something offhand or rested, hitting the target is the goal. Who is to deem what is necessary, YOU??? Enjoyment should be the goal and what makes someone happy not a forced shooting position or a sophisticated airgun. As already asked if the 98 is so great why are they not wildly popular and winning all sorts of FT and offhand matches? Again opinion and personal preference over actual facts. Do you really think most care the least in shooting 105 yards which the Dual Magnum will easily accomplish?! Most shooters of piston guns hardly shoot beyond 40-50 yards regularly. Is 105 some magic yardage that must be attained by the masses or just according to you? So be sure to deflect and not address how wrong the statements are "No Gas Ram is capable of Theoben 1999 Eliminator power is available anywhere." "copy" of a Theoben, or not a "true Theoben", or "isn't as powerful" (< power again)

Back to the topic. A RX set at its optimum (balancing power and accuracy) level in 5mm should be in the 18 ft lb range. Mine (RX1) was and it was one of the best airguns overall that I owned. Cocking effort kept shot sessions around 50 times at that was enough. I've mentioned this before but I lined up 22 aluminum cans and a Silver Jet pointed pellet went through every can. In order to do it the first can had to be struck near the top of the can. Can #22 was penetrated about 1/4 " or so up from the bottom. I loved that rifle ! With a 2.5X scope on it I could at least hit an aspirin tablet 8 out of 10 times at 10M. Four or five of those hits were solid hits exploding the aspirin into a puff of white dust.

Also gents I was curious about the RM100 or 1000. Not sure which is it but a gas ram springer. HTH, anyway what is the deal with them. Pros, cons, etc.

When Theoben closed up shop, several of the workers and engineers banded together and purchased the company. They renamed it Impact Airguns. They went on to produce what they believed to be the best version of the Theoben rifles. The RM-100 fits between the Evolution and Eliminator according to Impact Airguns. They came with lovely stocks and are remarkable guns. The company is still in business, supporting their guns and the Theoben line. Sadly only a few RM-100's were made and they are not easy to find these days.

I had an RM100X in .25 a few years ago and got a hold of Impact Air and they told me it was basically a rebranded Theoben Crusader. Great air rifle, always on the look for one.

I had an Evolution .20, RM100 .25 and an HW90 .25, great air rifles. Anyone know why Theoben used the HE gas rams in later models and HW stayed with the non HE gas rams?

My understanding is that Theoben never licensed the HE gas rams for HW. Why I don't know. My guess is that they were very proud of the system and wanted to keep it to themselves.

Thanks Lewis,
