Ruger Springers ??

My co worker has offered these to me. I sure I can get them for next to nothing but are they really worth messing around with?

One is the Ruger Blackhawk and the other is the Ruger Explorer. Both in .177. I’ll be taking them home to shoot them over the weekend. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with either of these guns.

My ruger shot wonderfully until it didn't. I almost threw it out in disgust but offered it to my 23 year old. My son loves it as a plinker. He manages to still group at 23 yards around the size of a small plum. He'll occasionally hit the spinner at 35, and he feels so excited about it.

In short, I wanted to love my ruger. It treated me great for around 3000 rounds, then it stopped grouping effectively for me, opening up way too large for me to enjoy it. I started to hate it..but if one was gifted to me, I'd give it a chance.

I took a few shots tonight. Mostly to get a feel for the triggers. I did not have any time to do any real testing. The youth model gun has a terrible trigger. The Blackhawk trigger actually seems pretty nice. And may have some adjustment to it also. This weekend I’ll set up a big sheet of paper and see how they group. I’ve got a few scopes I can put on them. but not sure if I have any rings.

Thanks for your input.

The Explorer is one I bought to get my great niece more interested in air gun shooting with an inexpensive rifle that was easy to cock and shoot. While not the greatest trigger as already mentioned, they can be smoothed some and the one I have is pretty accurate with opens at 15 yards and about a 430 fps shooter with RWS Hobbies. If you have younger kids or know someone who does and wants an inexpensive way to try and get them interested, the Explorer is a rifle that would work until they have the experience to get and shoot something a little better.

I did paint the stock because she asked if I would. Never did mount a scope because I wanted her to learn with open sights first, but the rifle is still here in the corner because at now 14, she's more interested in boys and her little circle of girlfriends than shooting.

I’ve got an Air Hawk that was my first springer purchase last year. It’s always been very smooth and vibration-free, with an OK trigger, but never been very accurate. I’ve spent a lot of time, effort, and money trying(unsuccessfully) to get it to group as well as a German springer does out of the box. It was fun to tinker with, but I’ve moved on.
