Ruger Impact Max

Welcome to affordable air gunning. The Impact Max Elite is a powerful hard hitting and accurate gun and after tuning up the trigger and putting a decent scope on it it will serve you well. The trigger can be tuned-up without removing the trigger assembly from the barrel. I bought my springs at Tacoma Screw Products Inc. tacomascrew.com (1-800-562-8192) I think I paid about $1.50 for each spring and something like $5 for shipping and handling. I used a 154-C for a very light trigger. I already sent my spare springs to 2 other members of this forum so I can't help you with that. I do have some pictures that might be of help.

To access the sear spring you must remove the E clips to the pins I have arrows pointing to and push the pins through and remove them. The one pin has a spring hooked to it on BOTH sides of the trigger assembly. Only unhook the springs where I show the arrows pointing and let the springs connected at their other end. After pushing the pins through you will be able to move the internal parts enough to remove the old sear spring. It will unseat when the pins are pushed out. Cut the new spring to match the length of the old one. I used a small pocket screwdriver to install the new spring by putting the tip of it through the coils allowing me to position it easily without it falling into the trigger assembly. There are small protrusions that each end of the spring must seat on.

In the next picture (below) I have an arrow pointing to the assembled trigger. It must look like the picture when you reassemble. It is easy for it to pivot up into the trigger assembly and after it's put together you will discover the trigger won't work.

Be careful when removing and installing the E clips. They can take flight never to be seen again.

I hope this helps, if you have any questions I will try to answer them ASAP. Homer, another member on this forum was able to tune up his trigger also and when he sees this post he may be able to add more info. that will help.

You guys with these tack driving Chinese springers need to come out to some field target matches and show us how its done. Apparantly we have just been wasting our money on these high end German and English guns. The Ruger Impact I tried wasn't even soda can accurate at 20 yards with any pellet I tried, I did a basic tune on it with no improvement and threw it in the garbage.

Agree.... .5 inch at 50 yards my arse

If you stop and think for a moment, I'm sure you would figure out he made a mistake. I can clearly see he meant 50 feet. 1/2" at 17 yards is doable and not bad for an air rifle at this price point.

And I'll say it again to those that are spreading misinformation...... the Impact max is not a springer. It is a gas piston.

A gas piston is a spring.

Hi atfsi2

I can't answer your question about the gas piston but concerning the scope I ordered a dot sight but had to return it. The dot wasn't a dot, it was a splat and made it impossible to acquire a target. The only thing to keep in mind is the Ruger Impact Max Elite has a recoil that will destroy any scope not designed for piston airguns.

Happy shooting

Hi Radioflier

Forgot to mention... The first thing I did was to clean the bore. There was an absolutely amazing amount of what appeared to be grinding/polishing compound in there.

About the piston... It would be nice to have a spare, esp. a higher quality one. There doesn't seem to be much sense in just replacing it w/ a higher pressure one w/o redesigning the entire action. However, there is always the possibility that the piston being used was selected as a compromise between .177 and .22 calibers. (the volume of the barrels being different... .22 volume is 154% of .177 volume)

I have a $10 (ebay) red dot reflex sight which I want to put on the barrel in place of the rear fiber optic sight. I find 2 problems w/o considering the recoil.

The lens/reflector itself is pretty good but the reflecting coating is not red selective (spelled cheap ) and too dense so that the view through is too dark. I can see why they would do this w/ a (comparatively) thick (plastic ?) lens to minimize a double image.

The LED is too bright for the lens. Any defect in the pinhole or my eyes scatters the light (coherent ?) from the LED into a mess. One possibility is to put a resistor in series w/ the LED and see how much I can reduce the scatter while still seeing the dot.

Well... It was a lot easier than I might have thought to break into the connection to the led ! I measure the current at 4 milliamps, so the resistance in w/ the led has to be somewhere around 275 ohms. I have tacked in resistors (found laying around) and 150k ohms is perfect for indoors but disappears outdoors. That's a mighty big drop in current !

So that seems to work but, as yet, I don't see any easy way to vary the current up and down. We will see how it goes when I get the indoor range set up.

So true jimziky. Ignorance is bliss!

Your Ruger appears to be slightly different than mine. These Impact Max rifles have very nice wood stocks. You said you mounted the scope directly onto the barrel/piston assembly. I can't do that because there is a nylon piece that holds the assembly to the stock and the nylon piece is dovetailed for a scope. I can't eliminate it but would prefer to have the scope mounted on solid steel rather than nylon.

Happy shooting!

I am somewhat new to airgunning. As a teenager 50 years ago I shot a Benjamin .22 and it was quite impressive for it's power and accuracy. Recently I decided to purchase a Ruger Impact Max .22 at my local Wal-Mart. I never realized a break barrel airgun could deliver the speed and accuracy of this one. I do however have a few issues I would like to correct with this gun. First is the trigger. The long pull took some getting accustomed to however the hard squeeze at the end of the pull is another thing. I read on this forum that a lighter spring will correct this problem however finding the spring is another matter. I looked on Amazon for one that was recommended (154-C) There is nothing currently available there so I went to Jones Spring Co. There the springs are .65 each but I have to place a minimum order of $35.00. Does anyone have this spring that is willing to sell them at a more reasonable price? Second: I see in many reviews that scopes must be designed for airguns to withstand the recoil. I have scopes for my high powered rifles, can these work? If not, what scopes are considered a better choice than the one that comes with the rifle? My gun benched and using a RWS Superdome pellets 14.5 groups nicely, touching holes. I find however that I need to keep readjusting it to keep it on the bullseye. I have already re-tightened the mounting screws so I don.t feel this is the problem. I think a better scope might be the answer. Does anyone have any ideas on either of my questions?
With springers there is an issue with double recoil . A lot of your high end powder burner scopes are not designed to handle this. You will trash a very nice scope if it isn't springer rated. Utg makes some decent scopes that won't break the bank.
