RTI Priest 2 lighter spring?

I just recently purchased a RTI Priest 2 performance in .177 from another member here on the forum. I spent some time with it yesterday and came away with one issue. There's not much adjustment in the FPS from the hammer spring adjuster. Its always shooting hot! I got this rifle to try out some slugs but would still like to tune down to shoot pellets when needed. I even removed the extra spring weight that comes with the performance pkg but still didn't make much difference. To see any drop in FPS at any given reg pressure I have to have the adjuster screw backed out so much that its sticking way out of the butt plate. Its so loose that it can easily be moved by just shouldering the rifle. I figured id bump the reg up to 150bar to help counter the hammer strike. It somewhat worked but just the slightest turn on the hammer screw resulted in a dramatic jump in FPS. Maybe its the .177 model not sure? Has anyone tried a lighter spring and if so do you have dimensions of it??? I will be reaching out to AOA this morning to see what they recommend. I also pulled the spring and will be searching my local hardware store for a similar spring to do some testing!!! If anyone else has had this issue or has some suggestions I'm all ears!!! Thx.

A .177 Priest shouldn’t have a hammer weight. You don’t need the dwell that the larger calibers require. The other thing is if the gun was always too fast, you never had your reg set low enough. A spring that’s too stiff will never make a gun shoot faster than a reg setting will allow. I’m not saying you don’t need a lighter spring for more adjustability, but you’re gonna need that spring to get slugs moving. There is very little chance of having a pellet/slug reg setting on that gun. If you just plan to play with your hammer spring when you jump from one to the other, you are going to have a whacked inefficient tune for one or both.

Vetmx,

Thanks for your input. It wasn't that it was always too fast. It's that there not much adjustment to the FPS at any given reg pressure. I dropped the reg down to 80bar and went up every 10 bar until I reached 150bar. So say at 90 bar with the hammer adjuster screw backed way out or turned way in the FPS didn't change much. I like to set my FPS 30 to 40 fps slower than the gun maxed out at any reg pressure. I was not able to get that much fps drop.. Makes me think the spring is to stiff and it did have the extra weight which I removed. I contacted AOA but they thought I should start with an email to RTI. In the meantime I will order a extra hammer spring so I always have a stock spring and I can mod the original to see if I can get a bit more adjustment.

I tried other springs in my RTI when I first got it to see if they chose the best rate. Mine is a .25 and they nailed it. It’s a metric spring but I can’t remember the ID and OD. I don’t feel like taking mine out so shoot me a PM with the measurements including the OAL and wire thickness. I will see if I can dig you up a lighter spring from my collection. If you don’t have calipers, I’ll just take mine out and measure it.
