Royale 400 with altaros reg question.

WeHas anyone tried this regulator on a 400 ?
I bought one a couple wks ago and tried it on mine but shot string was all over the place . My gun will shoot Jsb 18s in high 900's without a regulator but after instaling the Altaros I couldn't get more than 875 and gun was very loud . I'm sure this was due to excess air but no matter how I adjusted the hammer spring everything stayed around 875 to 850.
My thinking is if the reg is set around 1800psi it's going to be much easier for the hammer to open the valve thus more air and more noise ?
With my hammer spring backed out flush my gun shoots 900 without the regulator .
I tried turning the regulator higher but just seamed to be more air coming out without any increase in speed .
don't know what else to try now .

JFrench is yours an older model that doesn't have the power adjuster? Was wonder if it has the non-high power seat and stem in it. I think only the regulated 400's and 500's have the larger valve. Maybe the regulators plenum space is needing more air flow capability. You might check the differences in this post. Sorry I can't give you a direct, correct answer.

Maybe Weatherby will chime in. He's your go to guy for FX's.

Sorry I missed this thread.
Your plenum is a lot bigger with the altaros installed compared to a stock reg, so theoretically you should get more power as well.
But... FX's might need some delicate tuning before they shoot well. It seems your valve is open for too long a time, caused by too much HST or a too heavy hammer.
Although I dont have expexperience with the altaros on a Royale, I have installed one on a Daystate Air ranger with great results:

As your plenum is about the same size as without a regulator, I'd set the reg. pressure at the sweetspot where your gun shot best without reg.
Because your valve is easier to open at lower pressures, often the hammer needs to be lightened.
make sure to start adjusting with your HST flush with the action, and work up from there in 1/10th turn increments. This is most important.
If you have a hammer weight installed you can try it without it.

good luck,

Gijs

weatherby, my gun shoots best and quitest around 900fps . from 3000 psi to 2000 psi. 900 is almost as low as i can set it also. the HS adjuster is only slightly deeper than flush. or atleast it was . i cut about 2 coils off the hammer spring and now i can adjust it down to about 825 without the reg. but still was about850 t0 875fps with the reg installed. HST seemed to make no differance with the reg installed. and gun is very loud . way to much air coming out. i dont want to cut my spring anymore for fear of not being able to get it back where i have it if i cant get the reg working . i also turned the reg up to about 170 bar to try to make valve harder to open but that didnt work either . i dont think mine has a hammer weight so what do i try next ? maybe a weaker spring ? or could i put a heavier spring on the valve to make it harder to open ?
not sure i should even be doing all this , it was getting 60 shots with 28 fps spread without the reg . but i really enjoy tinkering with it and was hoping for a 5 to 10 fps spread when finished.

well after more playing its looking much better.
wish these were heavys thow but im ok with these if they shoot good .never tried them at this speed but they didnt shoot bad when it was set to shoot heavys at 900 so im kinda anxiuos to see how they do.i still think my gun should shoot the heavys this fast but i need a longer hammer spring after i cut mine off lol.
atleast its looking promissing now, and is quite .

Its Looking better !
i took my gun completely apart today and some things I found after looking at a fx diagram. The hammer adjuster they call it in diagram was in backwards . it's the long bolt looking piece the spring goes over .it was at the hammer end of the spring instead of adjusting end . worked fine that way without the regulator but dumped way to much air with the reg .
i think I may be able to get it better but I'm pretty happy with it right now . I also found the valve the hammer hits was sticking a little. Maybe that was Nothing when spring and stuff was together but it would catch when sliding it in and out while tore apart.
after inspecting it better I could see a scratch on the fat end of the stem . I just chucked it up in my drill and polished it with 600 grit sandpaper. Slid free after that. Insides of gun was pretty dirty to.
looked like the lead dust you see inside your moderator ?
This was the 1st time I had it this far apart . I bought it used about a year ago .
anyway here's what I got with it today .
