Rifle Recommendation Please

How about the Kalibrgun Cricket Rifle (not Bullpup) in .25? I got mine from Jim of Precision Airguns back in September of last year. It was his last one and even though he had already tweaked the trigger and had killed several chucks with it, intending to keep it, he graciously (and reluctantly "I never miss with it") let me have it. Shortly after I got it I went 7 for 7 on wine corks at 75 yards, 6 for 7 on a pepsi can at 150 yards and shot this group at 100 yards:

Because you can fill to 300 bar and it's regulated you can get at least the 40 shots per fill you're looking for. I only shot 5 pellets over the chrony, but I'm getting 48 fpe and I only had a variation of 3 ft/sec over the 5 shots. I can't speak to shooting it lefty as you describe though.

You mentioned some bench rest shooting and so I'm wondering how a bull pup design will work with that. I would throw in the mix the FX 300 in .25 and regulated. You'll get your 40 shot count and then some, very very quiet (I have the Royale 200 in .22 and I thought there was something wrong with it when I first shot it!), 45FPE, a most excellent trigger, about 43" long, quite light (6.6 lbs), three power levels, and very accurate to the distances you want to shoot at. The great, and also most difficult part of this is that there are so many great air rifles to choose from. I'm sure you'll end up with a great gun.

I think MosesM may have your answer. That's why I went with the Cricket Carbine, however, I bought the .22. I think the Cricket Carbine is an excellent choice for the all-around gun. I had heard the .25 had a different barrel than the .22, great to hear it shoots well too! Decisions, decisions. Enjoy the process and watch lots of you tube. I think getting an air gun is like picking a race horse at the track. You pour over all the stats of the horses and jockeys, see if they are moving up or down in class, what they did in their last race, what the critics say and then ……………pick the name you like the best! LOL. Best of luck! I am sure you make the right choice.

Well... now I have another rifle to research. Thanks for the recommendation. I like the adjustable cheek rest. After very little research it looks like; (1) no one has one available and (2) they have a CZ barrel. I'll have to research the CZ barrels.

Is it loud? Do you have anything to compare it to?

I haven't been able to find shot string data. Do you have a shot string documented?

"bobad"That's exactly the gun I need too. Dead accurate for bench shooting, agile and powerful enough for hunting. My research takes me around and around, but always takes me back to Daystate. I'm not ready to sell my first born to get one, but she better not cross me.

Which Daystate and caliber are you referring to? For me, the only (current) offerings by Daystate that I'm interested in are the Wolverine Hi-Lites. I have the B in .22. And I like .303, but I feel like I'd be giving up more of what I want (i.e. quiet, shot count, etc.) just to have the additional power. There's another discussion mentioning this, but the Wolverine in .25 (not currently offered) would be a very attractive rifle.

I'm not sure about Daystate's electronic guns. Some of the shot strings posted on AoA's website don't seem any better then the all mechanical rifles. I'm sure there are benefits, maybe (i.e. trigger, air efficiency, etc.). Someone with an electronic gun can chime in here. I've never shot one, thus, I'm not qualified. That's just my thinking. And we already deal with running out of pellets and running out of air. I'm not sure I want to add running our of battery to the mix also.

The Kalibrgun Cricket Rifle is a beauty, I've started with the .22 cal and have just purchased the .25 cal version since I like the .22 so much.

Have you checked out Cliff's blog VarmintAir? He has a lot of blog posts about the .22 cal and .25 cal of cricket rifle:
http://varmintair.typepad.com/varmintairs_blog/cricket-rifle-25/

This is what he said about the shot string:

"The Cricket rifles are regulated. The expectation is, that they will have a low extreme velocity spread, and this one doesn't disappoint. She's putting the 25.4 grain JSB King's out at an average of 961 fps at the muzzle, for 52.5 fpe, and an extreme spread of only 8 fps. When I get a chance, I'll set up the chronograph and run a shot string, as well as chrono a couple of other pellets that I want to try in her."

While I went with the RAW HM1000x in .25 and it gives your top 3 requirements in spades and is one of the most powerful .25's out there (55-60 fpe) it is not ambidextrous. Comes in left or right handing but not at the same time. Its also a bit longer and heavier than you want. There are however no better guns out there. The HM 1000 standard power versions are lighter and less expensive 8 lbs and $1600.

I actually spoke with Martin from RAW a couple days ago. I told him what I was looking for and he's working up something for me. I haven't committed because there are more details to finalize (if possible). To reduce some of the weight he proposes to cut a couple inches off the barrel (also to slightly reduce length), use a carbon fiber bottle, and use a walnut stock. To make things better (for me) the stock will have an adjustable cheek riser. The moderator will extend all the way to the bottle to give that little extra volumn. He mentioned a few other things, but I can't remember exactly what all he said. I'm waiting on an email from him with details and pics of the proposed stock.

There's really something special about actually being able to talk to the very person who will have a hand in building your rifle.

Again, I haven't committed to this rifle and I'm still researching others, but this is on the short list for sure.
