Rifle's for hunting and target practice

I am sort of new to this addiction but I’ll throw my two cents in. Buy used. The people here are always looking to buy something new, often after upgrading the gun they are selling. You save money over new, most of the time getting better than new product. Like I said, this is kind of addicting so if I enable some users to support their/our habit then it’s a win-win. Now I started out buying an impeccable Edgun R3 .25 with an equally impressive scope to start with. It’s a single shot which was fine as I found my way with targets then moving to ground squirrels. Then I got my hands on the Steyr Hunting 5 Automatic .22. Both guns are pellet on pellet accurate. But the ability to just pull the trigger again for follow up shots have nabbed two squirrels on two different occasions when they were near each other. Now I like the bullpups, but a full fledged rifle just feels right. Most times I’m hunting from sticks or supported from a fence post, etc., and the added length helps steady the rifle. I now use a deadshot magnum stand and the R3 is a little top heavy where the Steyr sits in there comfortably. So for all round hunting, targets and just plain fun while being more accurate than I am, I must recommend the Hunting 5 automatic. It’s way expensive, but right now if I could only ever have one rifle, that would be the one. The 22 is more than enough pellet, just look at some of the videos. Plus you don’t have to fumble with them once they’re in the magazines(I got 8 of em). My hunting sessions have never exhausted my mags. Jeezus this thing is fun all around. Good luck and welcome to the madness!

Alright guys, here is what I just pulled the trigger on and bought, based on the advice here:

1. Marauder .25

2. Benjamin hand pump

3. JSB Match Diabolo 25.39 grain pellets

4.H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme 28.24 pellets

5. Polymag Predator pellets

6. UTG dovetail to Picatinny adapter (so I can use scope/rings I already have for my rifles)

I think this will give me a good base to start from and see how I like things. If I start shooting often, then I will buy a .177 (ammo is cheaper and more shots per fill) and some kind of compressor like the Air Venturi. I can then get the "better" FX in .177 and keep the .25 as the "hunting workhorse".

My remaining question is what is the cheapest pellet I can buy that will shoot decently enough for plinking. 10 cents a shot isn't absolutely terrible, but when I got relatives over, they will be happy to hit my bigger targets I can set up and hear it go ping.

Thanks!

Well, I am an avid airgun hunter. I have owned a Marauder carbine .22, Daystate Pulsar .25, FX Impact .30, RAW HMx .357, and an FX Wildcat .25 MKI ("WC"). I can say unequivocally that my WC with the synthetic stock is, by far, the best hunting weapon I've ever owned for small game (including firearm rifles, handguns, and shotguns). It has the best standard deviation ("SD") and choice of hunting rounds of all the rifles I've shot; extremely accurate. The H&N Sport Baracuda Hunter Extreme .25 hollow-point pellet has a ballistic coefficient ("BC") of 0.0350, which is the same as the JSB domed. The WC is light and compact, and has a 40+ regulated shot per fill. I can carry her in a conventional backpack all day. With the DonnyFL SUMO moderator, she is quieter than a mouse peeing on cotton. (That's quieter than a mouse fart!) No more animal flinching before the subsonic round reaches them. Any critter within 100 yards is a done deal. As far as target shooting, the JSB domed pellet has a high BC (for a diabolo pellet), and is a great target round. I would go with a MKI, not a MKII. The MKI is a fixed platform; less to go wrong. Also, a .25 has more stopping power and bucks the wind better than a .22. You can't go wrong with the WC!

JMO. If targets and you really want to read wind, .177 as certain .177's are pushing as as 32ftlbs accurately. Talk about a laser. I have no problem hitting ¢.25 quarter sized rocks at 80 yards from a bench rested hopped up Discovery & my JIPA 48 .177 can also.

Hunting. Well, my State (ahem Commonwealth cough) just legalized small game & varmints. No big game but yotes are typically 200 yards out. I've been debating. With all the choices of great commercial let alone smaller customs, geez. Hatsan, Evanix, Sam Yang, Umarex Hammer (3 regulated shots at up to 700ftlbs w/ a 550 grain slug) the others around 237ftlbs. RAW's .30 is a win-win (awesome bows) or .357. I personally like Rainstorm II with regulator & quick fill. I like the semi auto Hatsan Barrage & their pump action as I'm a lefty.

If you get a .177 Mrod get the regulated LW FT model. BSA's new flagship is awesome but $1300.00. All my other listed ones besides RAW are $1000 or less. I'd say consider what you're hunting, distance, air, price of pellets or slugs. .177 for lots of fun & learning wind or a hot .22 that'll have no problem astounding you at 100 yards.
