Review of the Redesigned .177 JSB Monster pellets

Ha! It seems that the redesigned works better for some, and not so much for others.
I'm still a believer in the new design with MY barrel for the record.
Another thing that has given me good results is gauging my match pellets. In the tins I have gauged the pellets are one of two sizes- 4.53 and 4.54. My barrel likes 4.54 the best. Some others report 4.53 groups better for them. Head size seems to matter more than weight, but I still prefer to weigh to cull out some very light ones I find from time to time. And I still prefer to shoot all the same weight and head size in a match.

Washing and lubing has given me poor results in the past, so I skip that.

I agree head Dia. Has much more of an effect on my LW-Poly barreled guns! And all three perfer larger in Dia.! Which creates a problem for I and others that shoot Poly barrels... I REALLY wanted to like these Redesigned .177/13.4gr. pellets but just don’t consistently perform in my guns also similarly POI is lower vs. old style? Interestingly the redesigned head Dia. Seems larger overall per Die lot? So I expected them to be as accurate or even better than old style??? No go... also Note last lot I ordered of Redesigned’s shot terrible...? Head size 4.52-.53! “ trying to show in pics are different shape & dimensions of inner skirts between lots”

For what it’s worth? I know there’s many on this forum much more knowledgeable than I in pellet physics, and how these interface with different barrels, barrel dimensions and barrels designs, and more importantly how barrels from same manufacturer/style etc. can behave so differently?, but I’m gathering as much information as I can for myself so I can be competitive?, now those pics were only to illustrate how the same pellet can vary from lot to lot? Basically only difference is the skirt internal dimensions? Different manufacturing Die or Die wear? Either way I believe this is one reason why one lot of same pellet can shoot so differently in same barrel? I also know antimony of lead, amount of release agent left on pellets etc., concentricity and to me the BIG ONE “ECCENTRICITY” of pellet which is almost impossible to determine! Another reason why they may shoot so differently from lot to lot! ( just some rambling’s of mine...)

I tried the JSB monster redesign 13.3gn in the Mrod FT 177. The skirts are much larger than any other 177 pellets. I had to poke them with a pencil to get the skirt to go into the mag. With everything cranked I could only get them to 775 fps for 17.7 fpe. I'm now finding that barrel length and air are limiting the JSB 10.3gn heavies to 880 with the hammer debounce device installed since it took much adjustment to start making any change. My rifle doesn't quite have enough power to push these heavy and tight fitting pellets over 800.

You may find higher velocity leads to larger groups with these heavy pellets in .177.
I shoot Hunter class Field Target with the Monsters and have better accuracy well under the 20 fpe limit for the sport. I have shot these in competition with both a gen1 Benjamin Marauder and Daystate Red Wolf with great results. I do sort and weigh for matches but do not wash or lube. That being said, I have matched my high score with pellets straight from the tin. Barrel makes a difference as well of course- your mileage may vary.

I was shooting the JSB .177 Monster redesigns in the Crosman barrel at 775 fps/ 17.7 fpe. Much more difficult to feed at the skirt and so much drag in the barrel in addition to the weight. The Heavies group better even at 860. My opinion: JSB could have done better with the dies for the .177 redesign. I may try the original Monster to see if they fit better.

I commented above about how the .177 JSB Monster Redesigned have an oversize skirt and wouldn't go into my Mrod magazine without pushing them in with a pencil. I see the same issue in this video for the .22 in an FX Dreamline chamber. They fit so tight compared to all of the other pellets that it seems like he almost wanted to stop testing them for fear of damaging the breech seal.
