The single, definitive, source of such information is your state's hunting reg handbook. Everything else is just a crib sheet or interpretation of that. No ifs, ands, or buts (assuming you live in the U.S.) - anything else you hear either came from your state's hunting regs or has zero legal standing.
The regs change from year to year. Normally the changes aren't extensive, but they can be significant (e.g. raising the minimum caliber for hunting such and such from .22 to .25...).
Depending on what you're looking at (and you might just ask here, if you have a more specific question, like "Can I shoot hexagonal tail wally-whompers in October in Nebraska?") - someone might be able to point you to the correct section of your state's hunting regs. If they can't, it's just a rumor. Might be right, but it's not substantiated...
All that said, sometimes you have to read between the lines - the book may basically say "To hunt X you need Y" for a hundred things, and then somewhere, almost in the fine print say something like "rodentia, insects, garden pests, and those cars that play their bass so loud that it sounds like the panels shuddering may be taken with no limit and no restriction on the means of harvesting".
So, just what survivor45 and Ram2Jeep said...
