Regulators

Hi everyone, a few years back i got a Air Arms s510 ultimate sporter 22. I shoot alot and im thinking of putting a regulator in my air rifle. I'm looking at lane or Huma and i'm stil unsure. I've been playing with the 15.89gr and 18gr jsb pellets and im getting more ft/lbf with the 18gr (about 34-35). The reason i wanna put a regulator in my gun is because my shot count is not above 30 pellets and i only get about 10-15 100% accurate shots out of it.. And at the begining of the year i started shooting 15gr (i always shot with this gr pellet) but for some reason i can't get it to stablize i took the chrony out and saw im shooting the 15gr way to fast (990-1000fps). So i switched over to 18gr and i want to tune my rifle so that it shoots the 18gr at 920fps +/-.

I just want to know what will you guys prefer. I hunt mostly with the rifle so i want about 34ft-lbf but i shoot bench rest for fun and don't want to loose my accuracy.

Done Reg conversions on quite a few ... In my experience your going to loose a bit of power doing so.

The rifles design has a pretty small transfer path which works best at high pressure. Because regulators have the valve now working at lower pressure there really is no practical w/o a some major carving a way to make the same power. ( because of NOT being able to increase transfer size enough ) Most of the converted AA 500's in .22 when tuned correctly using a regulator seem to do best @ 26-28 fpe while having better trajectory shooting JSB 15.9's. Also lightening the OEM hammer to better work at the lower pressure really helps efficiency.

Just personal thoughts ....

Back the power wheel down to shoot 15.89s at 850-875. Fill to 2750psi. You should get 30 shots no regulator needed. YO!

I tried it the shot count is 5-8pellets more. And if i do this i cant shoot further then 30m

Then something serious must be wrong With your gun if you can't shoot farther than 30 (meters?). You should be able to accurately shoot past 50 meters with that gun. Check your barrel breech o- ring. YO!

Oh, because i went on lanes website and it says u can choose what ft/lbs it should shoot.

You can choose what foot-pounds you want as long as it is less than what you are getting unregulated. If you want close to your max energy, you are going to take a hit on the shot count unless other mods are made. Regulators are good for low extreme spreads, not so good for high energy- high shot count especially if your gun is ported for a wide pressure range. As Motorhead explains above, you can trade a little power for a better shot count with a little bit of tuning.

When i bought the gun i got about 40-55 extremely accurate shots. And when you put a regulator in u can push your bottle to 250bar where when you dont have a regulator u can only fill it to 200 bar.

So i would sacrifice shot count for power. I wanna have about 20 heavy hitting shots cause when i go out in the bush you only shoot max 10 shots and when u get to home you can always refill with the cylinder.

I understand the concept and application of regulators.

with a concerted effort, can't most 'adjustable' air guns be adjusted for max power/accuracy/shot count levels without the installation of a regulator? isn't that "adjustable" feature the same as a regulator?

In most PCP rifles you can adjust the hammer spring tension for more or less power. In some, you can also adjust the transfer port opening for the same effect. But neither adjustment changes the pressure entering the rifle from the cylinder or bottle which, if unregulated, will decrease as the rifle is shot. A regulator steps down that initial high pressure to a predetermined set point, and maintains that pressure until the supply side drops below the set point. Since the air pressure is the variable, and something for which the other adjustments cannot compensate, making it constant allows a more consistent velocity to be produced for a greater number of shots. I'm not expert, but that's my understanding.

Even though Motorhead didn't tell you what you want to hear, listen to him. He is one of the guys that you definitely want to show up when you post a topic like yours. What you seem to be unable to grasp is that the design of your gun does not lend itself to producing 920fps with 18grs without major mods. Open your ports to max, install a reg and tune those 15.89's to 880 or invest in a more powerful regulated rifle.
