Regulated Fx Monsoon .22

Hi All. Thought I would share my experience of installed a Robert Lane regulator in my FX Monsoon .22
Purchased 2nd hand a few weeks ago, the shot string when I got it gave me the following.

Shots - Mean - STD - ES
220bar Fill
1-12 854 14.35 47
1-24 863 14.32 50
1-36 867 12.91 50
1-48 861 15.55 52
1-60 847 33.15 121
rapidly downhill from there.

First 48 (4 Mags) are nothing to complain about for an unregulated gun. But I've never had a regulated gun so wanted to explore the possibilities.

After installing the reg and backing off hammer spring 4 turns.

Reg Set 110bar, 18gr JSB, 5 2/3 turns hammer, Goal was 800fps, (Reg in main tube, extension used as plenum)

Shots - Mean - STD - ES
220bar 3200psi Fill
1-12 797.67 11.24 42.2 Shot 12 = 801.1
190bar 2800psi
1-24 798.85 9.34 42.2 Shot 24 = 808.5
170bar 2420psi
1-36 798.03 8.48 42.2 Shot 36 = 793.2
149bar 2180psi
1-48 798.53 7.68 42.2 Shot 48 = 799.6
139bar 1850psi
1-60 796.97 7.80 42.2 Shot 60 = 790.2
108bar 1550psi
1-72 794.55 9.36 52.7 Shot 72 = 769.6
89bar 1300psi
1-84 787.7 19.69 98.6 Shot 84 = 723.7
72bar 1060psi
^All shot as one continuous string, broken down to show usable shots / mags.

6 Mags all usable and accurate! I was very impressed by the shot count, the ES let the string down early on though, not sure if the reg needed to settle a bit or if the large plenum plays a part in varying fps.
I don’t use this gun for hunting, only plinking spinners and punching paper, so the extra power some people are after wasn’t needed for me. I’d rather refill less and throw more lead.

Long story short. This reg was intended to be installed in an Air Tube Extension. Unfortunately for whatever reason my monsoon was slightly different at the valve end of the main tube and there was no flat surface for the 'drill free' reg to sit / seal.

So I installed it, as shot in the string above, in the muzzle end of the extension, within the main res. Effectively giving me a huge 45cc+ Plenum of regulated air (110bar). Which at the time of installation I thought was overkill and a waste of space.

LaneRegulators was later able to provide me with an adapter of sorts to turn the drill free reg into the more classic style requiring a hole to be drilled in the res. tube. Today, I installed the regulator in the the extension tube and with the reg set to 110bar, it was averaging about 720fps. I expected a drop due to the smaller plenum of regulated air, but I was hoping it would be 780ish and just require a small increase in reg pressure.

I didn’t bother doing a full string @ 110, instead i turned it to approx. 150bar (1 turn ccw).

Reg Set ~150bar, 18gr JSB, 6 2/3turns hammer (Reg in Res extension w/35mm of plenum)

Shots - Mean - STD - ES
200bar Fill
1-12 801.10 2.19 7.6 Shot 12 = 805.9
1-24 800.54 2.44 11 Shot 24 = 800.5
1-36 800.20 2.48 11 Shot 36 = 801.2
Off Reg 135bar 1950psi
37-45 Err 798.3 794.6 Err Err 790.9 786.8 776.5 791.5

Incredible first 36 shots. Admittedly I didn’t fill to 220bar so didn’t give it a fair chance but there was no way it was going to get an extra mag (or 3!) while maintaining on reg.

So now I’m between a rock and a hard place. I think I'm going to order a new extension and give string 1 another crack. (I drilled this one when I reinstalled the reg)

Long post, but I couldn’t find much info on a regulated monsoon. So heres mine so far. If anyone is interested I’ll try to keep the thread updated with my progress.

Anyone else had a go at this?
