Regal XL Ballistics for Mr. Tom.

Tom is a friend of mine who has just purchased his first PCP.
And since I have the same gun, I'm somewhat familiar with the Daystate Regal XL.
And a fine gun it is.

The charts seen below are based off my own gun and are very nearly dead on.
Tom advised that he will be hunting small game at a maximum range of 40 yards with a minimum of about 20 yards.
He asked for the most efficient zero mark for his scope at these ranges.

Based on the ballistics of my own gun which is very nearly dead on with these numbers.
I feel this best zero will be at 15 yards.

Fill pressure, 210-215 bar.
Scope height using sportsmatch medium rings., 1.46 inches over the center line of the bore.
Average Muzzle velocity of 905.
15.89 grain JSB.

1/2 inch low at 8.6 yards.
Dead 0 at 15 yards.
A Maximum rise at 28.6 yards of 0.39 of an inch.
Dead on 0 again at 39.4 yards.

0.04 of an inch low at 40 yards.

These numbers will be close and nearly dead on, provided his new gun achieves an average of 905fps.
So this is for Thomas. Anyone else who feels like jumping on board, I have no issue with that. He's a new member here.

There you go tom.
This is what I came up with.
I think it will be close for what you want to do.
I took into consideration that the longer shots are harder. So the scope needs to be more in tune with those due to wind drift
or human error.

ShootistX,

Thanks for the very good information here. This will be very helpful and I do appreciate it!

When I get delivery from AoA for the Regal XL I bought, I will zero at 15 yards at the indoor range I go to every week. The three range points you used in your analysis (i.e., 15 yards, 28 yards and 39 yards ) are extremely helpful for me for squirrels and/or rabbits. Squirrels must have taken several weeks off, and I am hoping when the weather warms up they show up again in the backyard and woods beyond, as they did in the fall.

I understand your overall assumptions and summary, but may need some help with the graphs in terms of making sure I understand the data. I have a couple questions, but let me digest a bit more.

Thanks again!!!

Thanks ShootistX for the information!

I did text message you a couple of months ago as well, and this information was, and still is, very helpful. I have had about three months now with the Huntsman Regal XL and I am very pleased with the quality and accuracy of the gun.

AoA did zero and test shoot at 20 yards before shipping it to me, and since it was shooting so accurately at that distance, I never did re-zero at 15 yards per your testing. I am sure I will get the same results you did if I change the zero to 15 yards. I am also finding that anything between 15 yards and approximately 30-35 yards is almost dead on accurate with the duplex Leupold reticle at either 8 or 10X Magnification. Translation - I aim at my intended target exactly in middle of cross hair, and pellet impact is dead on accurate at those ranges. As many others have stated, I do find the bolt a bit hard ( sometimes ) to cock, and other times pretty easy. I assume this will get a bit easier over time, once it is fully broken in. I really don't mind, but a side lever .25 Caliber PCP is in my future for sure! It looks pretty easy from the many YouTube videos I have watched.

I probably have about 500-600 rounds through the gun at this point. I can get 40 shots at around 210-220 bar, and if I fill a bit higher ( not exceeding 250 bar maximum in the green zone); I can get about 50 shots. I am using JSB 15.89 and 18.1 grain pellets. Tried alloys and the magazine did not like them. The gun jammed and I will never use them again. I had a pellet stuck in the barrel and had to re-cock the bolt and physically push the other alloy pellet down the barrel. I subsequently found out later that the gun does not do well with alloys, for me anyway. Pretty sure the gun likes the softer lead and dome shaped pellets, but I am curious about trying a 21 grain or higher .22 pellet for curiosity sake.

40 yards and beyond - I tried this a couple of times, and unfortunately I picked some windy days. Results were average and groups were not as tight as I would have liked. I am NOT shooting from a proper bench with two bags and a nice table, so that also is a factor. I am shooting over an outside deck rail with a folded towel. This is not as steady as a shooting table with ample room for two Caldwell bench rests or equivalent. So, I think this would improve my accuracy at longer distances.

All my pest control small game hunting is within 25-30 yards, and I am pleased with the accuracy for that environment. Have taken a few pests at 35-40 yards ( this is rare ) in the woods behind my house, but 90% of time they are under 25 yards in my backyard or just on the border line between my property and the woods.

Moderator trials and error - The built-in Daystate LDC was quiet and easy for me to screw off, as I had requested this from AoA. The first DonnyFL Sumo .22 caliber was not accurate with my gun. I experimented taking it on / off and switching back to the Daystate LDC, and it just did not shoot accurate for me. The POI was way off at 25 yards and less. Called Donny, described my issue, and he sent me a .25 Sumo and everything worked well. Wasn't sure if my first issue was pellet clipping or sound harmonics related, but the .25 is quiet and very accurate. A big shout out for Donny on helping me through this process. Very responsive, pleasant on the phone and did not rush me, and he was excellent to do business with here!

I bought the Omega Carbon Fiber 74 cu foot tank and finally found a Dive Shop that could fill to 4500 PSI. Had to leave it off at the shop, then they would top off the next morning. $8 bucks to fill and a 45 minute ride each way, but what a pleasure to use and fill the gun vs. a pump. I bought a pressure gauge for the fill tank, and I checked and it was filled to 4500 PSI capacity when I first got it filled. Have 12 fills so far, and will check and see how many before it empties. I heard around 40 fills, but we'll see.

ShootistX - Again, thanks for the work you put in with the charts and graphs and your test results.
