refurb air venturi 4500 compressor

just came in today... i do not think i will be turning it on, and will most likely be sending it back after i get a hold of pyramyd.

it came shipped with an old filter in it... completely saturated in oil... that also had a metal spike running through it (maybe to make changing filters easy)? but its obvious this thing has been in there for months and months.

in addition to that the threading on the top of the filter has some rough spots that i can feel, and the bottom of the oil water separator is full of these metal filings... is this how they come new??? some of the metal filings came out as i removed the old filter...

...again do all the water oil separators that come with these come filled with metal filings on the bottom to help disperse the liquid when opening the pressure release valve?

Brent is correct. It is coarse steel wool used as a filtration medium to prevent large particle debris from entering your fill tank. You were given a new filter to replace the oily one, so you are good to go. It is a refurbished compressor. It sounds like you have buyers remorse more than a defective compressor. Try it out once using the new filter and see how you feel after a fill before you send it back. You might have a different feeling about it. What have you got to lose?

The main concern was the steel wool. I have only used water oil separators that take an insert with desiccant and charcoal, so I was mostly worried about those metal shavings.

buyers remorse for sure. They are supposed to look through these things before sending them out. I expected them to remove an old filter saturated with oil that has a metal rod sticking through it… but it is Pyramyd after all

Good luck getting replacement parts in the future. Go back & look up all the complaints here. I truly wish I was wrong for I have one with low hours I cannot get High pressure seals

for. No they are not the same as YH. I wish they cool see how many sales they are losing of part replacement. Who in there right mine would buy something they can not fix.

well.. just want to be sure before i send it back, but i assume a ton of air shouldn't be escaping from one of the pistons? unless this is part of the cooling system. i assume its not because air doesn't start shooting out here until i turn the compressor on

really hoping its part of the cooling system because i have everything all setup in the basement with it now :(

circled in red where all the air is escaping. it still builds pressure but very slowly

Just to be clear, the metal rod through the filter is there so you can grab it and pull it out easier. Don’t lose it. I have had my AV compressor for several years with no issues (knock on wood) I do not have any air escaping on the motor. It is water cooled so I don’t think that is normal. Did you add the distilled water before running the compressor?

i would keep it, but i am sending this back due to most of the air escaping out the motor.

i added distilled water, with a bit of water wetter. let cooling run for 5 minutes, then turned the compressor on. HUGE scary crack/bang noise, then started to push air out (both the hole in the motor and the air hose).

also used the air venturi compressor oil it came with.

TLDR: DONT WASTE YOUR TIME BUYING A REFURB COMPRESSOR FROM PYRAMYD, its definitely far worse than getting a new one, and they obviously did not look through it like they were supposed to.
