Redwolf Owners - Save your money - Except for the fun of the experience

Over the last year, I have tried about every slug made from all of the manufacturer's looking for the absolute perfect combination in my .22 Ken Hicks tuned RW HP. In the end, none of them ever shoot as well as the JSB Jumbo Monster 25.39 pellets. Each time after investing in more slugs and giving them a try, I always say "never again" until someone comes out with the next greatest slug promise, and here I go again.

Today was no different as I looked to practice social distancing utilizing the 100 yard indoor range I am so fortunate to have. As you can see from the targets below, the 18 yard sight-in target with the latest NSA 20.2 and 17.5 grain slugs shot .52" and .70" C-t-C groups respectively (see below). While not shown, the RW shoots the JSB Jumbo Monster Redesigned pellets into basically a single hole at this distance.

At 50 yards, there is no contest either, as the JSB pellets shoot one large ragged hole, while the slugs open up to well over an inch in each case.

I didn't even bother measuring or showing the 100 yard group results. The slugs opened up to +2.5" while the pellets shot a terrific group of 1.27" C-t-C, about the same results I have gotten over and over.

Bottom line, I now have a vault of left over .22 slugs that don't perform nearly as well in at least my rifle as do the Jumbo Monster Redesigneds. Save your money and use it on more pellets.....

Your twist rate is probably not optimized for slugs. Your best bet would be the FX hybrids.

I can get sub moa @100yrd (outdoors, in light wind) in my 22 FX crown using 36gr boat tail .218s

Another forum member had made note of a large accuracy increase with slugs when he ported his barrel

.25" LONG x 0.0625" WIDE slots. 90 degrees apart x4. 1/2" before muzzle

Did you try the JSB KNOCKDOWNS? same weight as the JSB RD, however I think you are missing a trick here, whilst indoors you may see the difference in group size having no external factors, however put the pellets against the slugs in some strong wind at 100 yards+ and you will certainly see the slugs are way less affected by the wind.

The new DW has a slug compatible barrel availible so I understand.

Thanks for the info. With my Impact X in .22 I've come to the conclusion that slugs are not the best choice for top accuracy under 100 yards. 'Just my opinion. However, with the one that is most accurate in my AG, which happen to be the FX version, I feel it is the right choice for raccoon/ground hog sized pests. For target shooting, JSB 18.13's are my Go To's.

Hmmm....

To throw 1 experience in the mix.... we've been trying different slugs from NSA in a more or less random time and order and have had some that rivaled the Jumbo Monsters. We mostly just try them and they are good or no so good. Recently Nick sent some 17 something grain in 2165 I think, and they came out at 940ish at the same setting as the Monsters at 930. Not good ... around 3 inches at 100 but reasonable at 30. On a whim, went to the next pl and was at 1040. Shot less than 1 inch at 100 and 1 hole at 50. We tried that in a different rifle with similar results. An interesting side note was that these had a very close bc to the Monsters .... so would blow just as much in the wind.

So all I'm trying to say is that even though they DON'T shoot well .... doesn't mean they CAN'T in your particular barrel.

I am definitely not a slug guy but I’ve been playing around and my gun likes the NSA 20.2 the Fx hybrid 22.5 and the NSA 23’s in that order, mind you have not tried any other brands? These were all .217 dia. With all this being said I never expected my RW to shoot slugs so that might be why I’m so impressed? Good luck to everyone trying these in your RW
