RedWolf meets smoothX

I am following this thread with great interest. Denis and I, HobbyMan form Canada myself are doing exactly this but with a twist. As a test, we elected to order powder burner liners from Brownells Gun Smithing Supplies in .224. They are only a couple of thousandths larger in dia. that the FX liners, and Denis made the tube and thimbles to fit them. Mine in a Rainstorm II that is set up for .257 and .25 slug shooting currently, and his a .30 impact.

this is a test, and only a test to see if it is viable project or not. If successful, .172 slugs will be the next project. I would love to try this in the upcoming Raptor being produced by JSAR. You've just gotta love a good project!

I love the workmanship that went into your project. I too had to lengthen the probe to get the seat that I was looking for. I was amazed at the finish inside the Brownells liners. they look virtual honed. But I honed mine anyway. LOL . It's been a bit of work, but it is now shooting bullets I cast from Decked and modded NOE Monds. that are now weighting 29.3 grs. Accuracy has been good at 880, batter at 980, and continues to be good at 1030.

Anxious to see where you find the best accuracy with slugs. I do a bit of testing for Nick, of NSA, some for Varmint Knockers, and will be testing the new HP system for NOE.

Rough life, but someone has to do it! :<)

Wishing you Fantastic Luck with such an outstanding an forward thinking project! ;<)

Hi Nomo. The barrel is the hint. Thought I’d try to make up 2 end pieces and “wrap” the liner in carbon fibre. Not a shroud but carbon fibre directly to the liner to build up a barrel. With PB there is the issue of heat and it requires special materials and technic but airguns dont have the heat issue.

Should be a good solution for a light and strong 700mm barrel.

Lewis, I think you mean BM-(thimble) TM-no thimble unless specified or machined in later

Off topic but.

In the UK i have worked on two tm1000’s fitted with thimbles, both have caused issues as the pellet goes from thimble to barrel. The problems were, the fit between thimble and barrel was loose, pinching down on the thimble pushed out of alignment with bore, don’t pinch it down hard enough it can fly out the back of the block during the firing cycle. The other issue is, the bore of the thimble runs concentric with the o/d but the bore of the barrel did not run true to the step in the barrel. Both caused to pellet to climb over the gap.

So, after finding the best orientation of the barrel I was asked to cut off the thimble do a standard RAW/Rapid transfer port and index dimple, problem solved, sometimes simple is better.

The Brownell's liners have proven to be very accurate with the modded NOE bullets. but it took some work to be sure. However, I have a second one, and may very well fully cf wrap it and install it in the conventional manner. I just finished a .25 slug barrel and used the conventional installation and used several hi modus cf tubes to bring it up to .8 inches in dia. It is a very good shooter. ;<)

Sure was easier to get good results!

Well I’m wrapped with how the RedWolf is shooting. The NSA 26g slugs have been shooting really well and they are .217. I’d shot most of my H&N samples and they shot ok but not as good as the NSA.

I read in another post by Knifemaker about the importance of the diameter of the slug and he mentioned sizing the slugs. Well I have 3 sizers for .22 but hadn’t thought to run the slugs through them til I read that. So I had 3 only of the H&N 25g slugs left at .218 . Ran them through the 5.52 sizer. There was some resistance but not much. Shot them at 930fps and at 100metres.

Under 1/2 an inch. 😊 Can’t believe such a small thing like that can make such a difference.

I have to say thanks to Knifemaker. We are lucky to have people so experienced sharing there knowledge on the forum 👍
