Red Wolf HP Woes/Options

Hi, I purchased a gently used Red Wolf HP in .25 as a treat to myself for my upcoming birthday. It was a great price (but my Dad always cautioned - buying used is buying someone else's problem). Upon arrival, I tested it over the chrony with JSB King Heavy (34 gr) pellets on high - it was only doing about 810 fps. Does that seem low to you for high power? It is right on the mark for 50 ft-lbs, but probably not a good speed for the heavy's. Anyway, I polished and cleaned the barrel, polished the sharp corners on the breach, opened the barrel transfer port, and put a new barrel oring in - still doing 810 fps on high power. I was surprised that the port had no effect - I have done it on most/all of my other PCPs with great improvement. The size increase in the port was well polished after I completed. The factory port had a burr on it. My Brocock HR Magnum came in at a factory tune of 890fps with JSB Heavies.

I scoped the RW up and set-out to try it in my 75-yard backyard range. Wow was it quiet with the Huggett!!! The JSB Heavies were visibly spiraling, though - best I got was 1.5" (shooting from the bench with the single shot tray). Some where even off paper! I tried JSB King (25 gr) on medium power and they were better, but not great. On high power the 25 grs were going about 910 fps, with the best group just at 0.75", but still some spiraling and most groups were not great. For comparison, on the same bench, I shot my Impact MK1 and had about 30 shots within .75" of the bullseye and 1 flyer (all were slightly left, but very repeatable). This was after it sitting for 1.5 months, while I was off shooting other stuff. BTW the Impact was dead nuts on from my last shooting session, despite traveling around with me.

So my questions for the RW HP are:

  • Try MKII Heavies or a different moderator?
  • Any way to reasonably power up to about 870 fps for the heavies (e.g. low cost) or are my options limited to the programmer or Heliboard?
  • If I power up to 875 to 925 fps for heavies, will I wind up breaking the internal components over time? This is an early 2018 version of the RW HP, so probably has the older board in it.
  • Should I get a second 22-cal barrel kit and shoot the Monsters at higher speed?
  • Any other suggestions (sell it for a loss and get the RAW that I really should have purchased before the BSA/Streamline/Brocock/Crown/Impact(s)/RW)?

Thanks for the advice!

Dan

It should still be under warranty. You could just send the action. Thats what I would do. This is based on questionable accuracy alone. I would ask them to bump the power back to at least factory spec yours sounds a little low.

Cranking the power up on these guns shouldn't hurt anything unlike normal mechanical guns.

Warranty is an option, but then again it adds cost to the picture. $100 shipping each way gets me most of the way to a Heliboard. I think 800fps is really all these RW HPs will do with the 34gr pellets - not really my idea of high power...

I could also try my DonnyFL moderator and maybe swap the Brocock 25 cal barrel on it as well. The Brocock shot well, I just didn't like the pseudo 2-stage trigger.

Thanks!

Dan

Here's the Impact at 75 yards, same JSB King Heavies. I think all of the shots that are to the right are partially from the heavy trigger. I also have a wandering regulator - it tends to creep up if I pause for a minute or two. Nothing huge, but enough to affect benchrest. The last two rows are 2-shots each.

Probably $40 to ship the action only with full insurance. Worst case you possibly get a more accurate barrel. Return shipping free under warranty. Small price to pay for a $2699 gun.

I guess, one fundamental question: Is the RW HP capable for 875-925 fps with the 34 gr .25 JSB Heavies? If AoA can't get the stock HP above 800 fps with the Heavies, should I just go the Heliboard route? Seems like others are getting the .22 cal beasts up around this number.

Dan

For some reason it seems like the .22 had as much or more power than the .25. Both in HP. Seems like the stock number for the .25 to me.

They should be identical in power in both 22 and 25 at 50fpe. The 22 is already right at the crest of MAXED OUT so the 25 should naturally seem anemic spitting heavier lead. It would be a good hunter in 25 leaving a bigger hole in game with less chance of overlenetration at long distance and the 22 for the 100 yard target shooter.

The Pulsar HPs are the same way too.

Need more power for longer distance shooting get a Korean (or Chinese Huben or LCS SK19 Chinese but American assembled) gun or mod an Impact the right way.

I have a recently purchased .25 RW Safari from AoA. Mine shot the Mk2 34g at 947 average FPS on high and 865 on medium. JSB 25g at 900 FPS on low. Even if you have the older board, something’s wrong here.

You are getting very good advice to call AoA and factually confirm if it is still under warranty. They will fix your accuracy issue under warranty. Yes, you can buy the Heliboard and install yourself, but give AoA a try first and let them really go through the gun soup to nuts. They have some top notch RW ART tech savvy people who know these RWs.

Ship just the action and my guess is they will want to look at your barrel too. I made a stupid mistake recently and shipped stock, action and barrel to them with $2500 insurance and it cost me $162 one way from my local UPS store. Gun was damaged by UPS (box dropped off conveyor and split open), but luckily it was just the barrel cap that needed replacement. If the stock or action was severely damaged, I would have had to file a claim. I also should have removed barrel from stock and action before shipping. Lesson learned.

There is an AoA repair email ID on their website. Document your issue/experience and follow up and call their Tech department. I had an accuracy issue with my .25 cal, which is why I sent it to them to diagnose and fix. Good folks!

Tom

The Safari is different than the .25 HP and is higher powered...

Your gun is shooting as it was from the factory....I have both the .22 and .25 HP and before I reprogrammed my .25 I had close to the same numbers as you in .25.

I have heliboards on order for both mine as well as programmers for the original board.

If you need.... I can send you one of my programmers to borrow for a bit if you want to do some testing and not invest an additional $400.00 Just PM me and we can set it up.

I will say the spiraling is strange as I noticed none with either of mine...The MK2 33.95 at about 850 is a laser out if my .25 HP so most likely bumping up the high setting pulse rate by 200 or so will get you there!

You can then program medium or low for the kings or set all 3 settings slightly different pulse lengths but all tuned higher for the 33.95.

Hole this helps a bit....

P.S. Happy Birthday!

Dan - that’s a low cost nice offer from Dr. Mike. Borrow the programmer and see if bumping velocity up resolves your accuracy concerns. If not, you have Plan B: Pursue warranty approach with AoA.

My trigger release out of box was 3-4 oz. The 2nd stage screw is extremely sensitive, and I could not get mine to 8oz, which is what I wanted. I found that very small turning of the screw would vary between a few ounces to 1lb, 5 oz pull. Try as I might, I could not adjust to my preferred 8-10 oz release weight. So, I left it there and it’s pretty nice.

Whatever you do, please update the post.
