New. 25 Crown Continuum MKII groups

7 years ago on 02/25/2014 (pics are time stamped) I shot the following four, 10 shot groups back to back from my first pcp ever, an FX Royale 500 at 50 yards, no wind. 40 shots, no flyers. I had no other experience with PCP's just thought that is how PCP's were. I sold the Royale 500 to try other guns and could never get that level of consistency again from many other makes and models including other FX's. Back then (before AGN existed 😲) I didn't know what "harmonic tuning" was (I don't think many did) and I just didn't know how lucky I was to get that kind of a "tune" out of the box. Only, 7 years later...............

After about 2 weeks and well over a thousand shots of beginner tuning with the Crown, these six, 10 shot groups, were shot back to back this morning with:

JSB Kings 25 grainw - no wind - 50 yards from the muzzle - 700mm barrel - 900 fps - 120 bar reg pressure

Over the last several days I have only been trying to replicate the results of my first Royale 500 from so long ago and I feel like I'm pretty much there.

I'm pretty proud of these results and quite frankly I don't think I could do any better even if the gun could.

I'm sure I'm just asking for it, 😁 but all opinions are welcome. I'm kind of a paper punching nut and love seeing others results too so please feel free to share pics / videos of any groups at 50 yards, good or bad, from any gun you choose. My next step will be to move out to 100. I've never been able to shoot MOA at 100 so I'm very curious to try again.

Also, I used to only post stuff like this in video format for legitimacy and maybe I will again soon, the video stuff is just so labor intensive.....

Here are the three previous target cards I shot trying to get the Crown dialed in.

Believe it or not, you could probably squeeze a tiny bit more from it, lol. But, sometimes it's best to leave well enough as is. Not sure if you're aware of bonding the barrel liner with carbon fiber.... What this does is stiffen the barrel, and make it less susceptible to being harshly affected by harmonics. I have a continuum as well. I decided to convert my 700mm barrel into a 500mm. I've been shooting 21gr slugs, and have bonded the barrel. I literally slapped the thing together, and it was shooting lights out. I've had the gun since the continuums came out, and have it dialed in to shoot 16gr pellets @960fps in the short barrel. A 7gm hammer weight is thrown in when I shot 36gr slugs in the 700mm barrel. So, there is a tune on it. But I made no adjustments specific to the new slugs or barrel to warrant it shooting so extremely well... I don't think it's a coincidence. New superior liner as well... supposed to be less tune sensitive. The long 700mm barrel is notoriously touchy about harmonics.... so, some things to consider.

Cliff, I'm duly impressed. ⭐

When I get to where you are now, maybe I have some advice.

But for now, I only have applause. 😊

Matthias

Thank you Matthias, it only took me 7 years and many guns to get back to groups like this 😉

Those are really impressive consecutive 10 shot groups. Major kudos to the shooter. Perhaps 5 shot groups at 100 yards? Or, keep pushing the distance in 10 yard increments until your groups open up? Either way awesome shooting.

Thank you Leon! I think you might be right and 100 yards is in the near future for me

Long Gun, thank you taking the time ot share the info, it is greatly appreciated! I had not heard anything about that before, could you point me to somewhere I could get some more info about that please? What would cause an issue like that?

If the shorter barrels were in fact less harmonic fussy, I would absolutely entertain getting a shorter barrel. Also, when I purchased my Continuum about 4 weeks ago, the description on AirgunDepot said the come with a Smooth Twist x barrel liner and now it says they come with a superior liner. I'm not sure if mine actually came with a superior liner and they just had not updated their web site yet. I had heard of the carbon fiber bonding but hadn't looked into it. Now I have another thing to look at 👀 Thanks again for the helpful info!

Search for Earnest Rowes custom shop. The tubes are a specific size he has made up. They're not a generic size. They don't cost much. I just slathered epoxy on mine, and worked it slowly in under the full length of the tube. You can see I cut mine. I think having the one space at the muzzle is possibly all that is needed? But I felt more comfortable doing it like this. Eventually the middle support will fatigue and fail. And I will not be able to replace it, lol. But I left a little off the end because I don't think it's necessary.

I got a short barrel cause the 700 is so unwieldy in the woods. And I'm still managing around 50fpe from mine in .22 caliber with the 500mm barrel.

And yes, all new FXs should come with superior liners.

Cheers.

may I suggest giving the JSB MKII 33.95's a try? In my 700 mm barrelled Crown 25 cal, they are night and day different from the 25 grain. Stable as all get out, pretty wind resistant for a pellet. My daughter and I have shot and killed ground squirrels at a lasered 140 yards. Yes, the big barrel is awkward, but when you've a place to set up and work a squirrel town, the 33's punch way above their weight, so to speak.

My 50 yard groups are similar to yours, but it's when you get to 75 and 100, especially with tricky winds, that the 33's shine.

I've read that some Crowns prefer the old style 33's- my likes the MK II's.

That thing is long enough that you were only shooting 48 yards if you measured from the muzzle lol.

Looks like good shooting to me. If you are happy with it rock on!

lol, no kidding right! For some reason I've always really liked the look of "long" guns and I only ever shoot from a bench and don't hunt so length isn't a deterrant for me. Thank you thumper, rock on!

Hi Oak! Thank you for the suggestions, you are one step ahead of me. I have still have some tins of both the 33 grain MKI and MKII left over from when I had my Royale 500 and I'm going to try those next. I remember they shot well out of my Royale and am very interested to see how they do in the crown. Basically I wanted to get the gun tuned to shoot the 25's well first, then hopefully I will be able to put either the MKI or MKII's in and have the tune be a "plug and play" for both the 25's and one of the 33's. If I can have both pellets shooting well with the same tune and not have to change the reg setting that would be my ultimate goal. Of course at some point if I want to try slugs I may have to change the reg at that point but I'll cross that bridge when I get there. I was never able to shoot MOA at 100 yards with my Royale using pellets (slugs weren't available back then) and if I can't get this crown to do it with pellets I will likely take the slug road. Thanks again for the input, happy shooting!

Wow, really great 10 shot groups Cliff. Good to see you back in the game. Your Crown is a .25 cal right?

Hey Fuss! I was hoping you were going to pop in at some point, great to hear from you as always! Yes, the Crown is .25, thank you for pointing that out. It made me realize I didn't put much detail into my OP so I've edited it now to include some more info about the gun, setup, etc.

I think at this point I can say for sure that .25 is my favorite caliber. For some reason I just appreciate how it feels more substantial both leaving the barrel and the "thwack" it makes on the other end. I'd probably really like .30 but now the ammo is starting to get a little spendy for sending lead down range all day.

Hope all is well, happy shooting!

Hi Long_Gun_Dallas,

I looked on Ernest Rowes Custom shop and it says the carbon fiber liners are not compatible with the newer super light barrel liners so I think I am out of luck on that one. I checked the description of my gun on Airgun Depot's site and confirmed my gun did ship with the superlight superior liner.

Also, I've been doing some searching and can't find anything online indicating the 700mm barrel is touchy regarding harmonics. Is there some place you can point me to where I could read more about this please?

Thanks again!

Cliff
