Re: Testing Expansion (fx hybrid)

In reference to the NSA thread about lack of expansion when shooting into gel/wax. Sometimes things just dont work as they should, every medium is different. Here is a fx hyrbid that i pulled from a squirrel today, shot at 40yds at 920fps. In the neck, through the shoulders, through the body cavity and ended up in the hips. This has been said to be the best expanding slug. Sometimes they just dont work. This squirrel fell stone dead and never twitched. You gotta test these in the real world, not just relying on expansion into gel (or lack of).

Thanks for the nice posting i have experienced quit a bit with .22 slugs in the lighter weights with approx. the velocity that you are shooting them with. In my experience the Javelin 23 gr mushroomed best in real flesh/bone praxis. ( tried the FX, nsa 20.2, H&N 21 gr, and ZAN 23 gr)

Maybe try the Javelin as well and compare .

By the way the nsa’s were very very good grouping in my wildcat with standard superior liner.

The javelin 23's shoot really nice out of this gun, its a buddy's gun. I wish they would make a 20 or 21gr so I could try them in my lower power gun, mine likes the h&n 21s and NSA 17.5s. Old NSA 17.5's opened up GREAT, these new ones suck.

I have to say from my experience your result on the squirrel is the exception not the rule. I have shot a lot of different slugs into calibrated ballistic gel and the results are the same when shooting into the flesh of light body pests and game like pigeons and squirrels. And as far as getting good consistent expansion I would put the FX Hybrid .22 cal. 22 grain at the top and then the Griffin slugs with the poly balls embedded in the tip. The Javelin slugs also expand pretty well too. Here is just one of the videos I did testing various slugs for expansion. This is a video comparing the FX Hybrid .22 caliber to the NSA 23 grain on a dead pigeon. Bill
