Quiet powerful Bullpup choices?

I'm looking for an accurate .25 bullpup repeater that has a forward cocking lever, that can shoot JSB kings at 900+ FPS and heavies at 850+ FPS. The ones that come to mind are FX impact or Wildcat, Vulcan 2, Edgun R5M long. Qualities of lightness, quietness, shortness of length, ease of maintenance all factor in. I have a 0.25 Marauder that shoots JSB kings at 850 FPS and is slightly louder than I would care for. So I am looking for something lighter, more powerful and quieter than I have today. The short comings of the Marauder are it's too heavy to shoot well offhand, the cocking force to stiff and unrefined and the length longer than I like. Maybe my expectations are too high and I know many of the qualities I'm looking for are mutual exclusive, so trade offs have to be made.

I would like to to be as quiet as possible as backyard friendly means my neighbors 150' away can only hear the pellet impact and nothing from the rifle. As it stands today I can hear my neighbors bouncing a basketball or talking normally in their backyards even though they are over 150' away! Even with a so called quiet Marauder after a few shots I heard someone say "what was that." Having only the pellet noise will mask the nature of the sound compared to a pop followed by a pellet impact. Probably a Donny FL Emperor on any of these would fit the bill, but big, heavy, fat and long!

From reading the opinions here I'm under the impressions that the FX guns and Vulcan 2 will be louder than my Marauder unless an LDC is added. I don't know about the R5M long (I assume the long is heavier and quieter). Having to add an LDC will increase the overall length and weight and cost. The R5M long may fit the bill but I haven't read much about how loud it is compared to a Marauder and it's would cost about the same as an Impact. Also I have read that the hammer noise is right next to your head and is so loud that one owner sold his. I'm guessing the Impact will probably be louder than a Marauder but I believe I can construct an eccentric shroud / LDC (Edgun like) keeping a short over all length with little if any weight gain. However I'm am unsure if the accuracy would be negatively affected.

I'm leaning towards an R5M or Impact.

R5M - Pro simplier to maintain and repair more robust. Cons hard quiet it down any more than stock, heavier harder to adjust the tune. Hammer noise next to the shooter's head.

Impact - Pro lighter, better trigger, no hammer noise next to your head, easy to tune without taking anything apart and change calibers. Cons harder to maintain and repair, prone to leaks over time, louder stock than R5M.

Maybe my noise requirements would be better served with a 0.22 over a 0.25, but at times I prefer the 0.25 to better dispatch raccoons. So maybe an Impact with a 0.22 barrel for target shooting and 0.25 for the occasional vermin.

If your dead set on forward cocking then I would give the Vulcan 2 a hard look. If you can live with rear side lever cocking then hands down the Taipan Veteran Standard. I’m not a fan of the Impact (been there, done that) and I’ve never owned an Edgun but I did remember reading there were some things people were disappointed about with the new ones.

Whatever your choice may be, you will need an external mod from Donny to make it as quiet as you need it.

You mentioned pellet impact noise. The impact of a .25 cal pellet doing from 45-55 ft lbs has a pretty significant wallop when it hits. Noticeabley more than a 30 ft lb .22. If you are seriously trying to be quiet, a 30 ft lb .22 can be made silly quiet and still easily take care of raccoon sized pests at reasonable distances with head shots.

I currently own 3 of the 4 brands and calibers you've listed as being considered. I own the Vulcan Tactic in .22 caliber and it is the most accurate of the lot. The Vulcan .22 caliber is he poster child for the term "Tack driver". And pushes 18.1 grain JSB at 880 FPS clip out of the box (no adjustments), for 31 fpe. It is very quiet with the DonnyFL moderator. However, the rifle is on the heavy side -- roughly 10# when scoped.

My Vulcan2 Tactic .25 caliber with the DonnyFL moderator is quiet and accurate -- only slightly less so than my Vulcan Tactic .22 caliber -- and weighs the same as the Vulcan Tactic .22 cal. This rifle shoots JSB 25.4 grain pellets at 890 FPS, ~ 44-45 fpe.

My Wildcat laminate in .25 caliber is a beaut. And a "Tack driver" as well. This bullpup is light, compact -- very ergonomic -- and quiet. However, at 44Fpe stock, may not meet all your demands for power.

The Impact (X) seems to cover more of your preferences for weight, power (adjustability), accuracy and quiet with the stock moderator included with the rifle.

Based on your requirements, I must recommend the Impact (X) in .22 and .25 caliber.

Just my two cents-

I would suggest you do your research and buy the one that has the LEAST amount of complaints.

I would also question whether or not you are one to enjoy AND are mechanically inclined to be forever

constantly fiddling with your gun or simply just one average Joe

who just wants to enjoy shooting it. I personally like simplicity and would rather just shoot reliable

trouble free guns and not have to worry about being without my guns if ever I need to have

warranty work done. Worst is the WAIT TIME of being WITHOUT YOUR GUN...

I would rather be one of the silent majority who has trouble free guns than hope and pray that

I am one of the lucky ones who buys a trouble free model which so many have already complained about.

Thanks for the opinions. Leaning towards the impact as 2manyairgunsz has suggested. On the plus side highly adjustable and light. Also look at the space between the top of the stock shroud and the bottom of the scope bell. A very large offset shroud can be made for the gun to be super quiet while remaining short. Made of carbon fiber it even may be lighter. The only downside is the Impact's reputation of high maintenance. I wouldn't be happy if new I got one that had a bad regulator creep or leaked air having to send it back to FX waiting a few weeks for it to be repaired. Even if this wasn't the case that I shouldn't expect it to be leak free for years as my Marauder has been, but rather many of the o-rings should be replaced as routine maintenance. I am mechanically inclined and don't mind spend a few hours a year for maintenance, but wouldn't want to have to spend a 40 hours a year to keep it running. The Impact does seem to have a lot of online information on how to fix stuff which is good and bad.

I'm with @jwilson and @kdog. .25 EDgun Matador R5M, mine is the Standard. If you have no interesting shooting the .25 heavies, this is the way to go...Otherwise go for the Long. I have the Standard since if I want real power, I have a .30 FX Bobcat, which has significantly more power than even the hottest .25 heavy. The Standard is a couple inches shorter than the new FX Wildcat Compact (WARCAT). I think the WARCAT is 31 inches, and the R5M standard is 28 inches or so. Its just about the same size as the .22 FX Wildcat without a moderator, yet the EDgun comes with a very effective moderator standard and is included in the 28 inch length.

I have a 22 marauder and 25 Fx Wildcat MkII compact with a Tatsu LDC. Although the wildcat is very very quiet and BY friendly, my Marauder with Hill baffles is hands down quieter. Just got a.22 Wildcat with a Huggett. It might be closer to the Marauder .22, but not quite as quiet. But from what Ive heard (friends) I think both WCs are quieter than his .25 marauder.

I know you mentioned forward cocking lever, but I would still recommend to take a look at Pulsar

Yes it has lever in the back, but it's zero effort, you are not cocking spring. Action and magazines are extremely smooth.

And of course it's quiet, with any even small LDC it's silent, not 150 feet away - it's 15 feet away silent.

I also have Vulcan 2, very powerful and accurate, but couple things bother me - no indication whatsoever - what is going on with your pellets

You can't see how many pellets you have in the magazine, you can't see if it's loaded or not (previous generation at least had loaded indicator)

No protection from double loading too...

Many have said R5M. I'm considering it in the long version, since the long would have a larger shroud volume than the standard so it should be quieter at the expense of length and weight, but you also get more shots and better efficiency. I have 2 concerns with the R5M. The 1st is since it has an offset shroud adding a moderator isn't easy as buying something off the shelf. Therefore it has to be very quiet out of the box. jwilson has posted that by adding foam to the shroud makes it is real quite. Much quieter than my Marauder, I hope so because that's want I am looking for. The 2nd potential issue is that one owner is selling his because the hammer noise as too much for him. Ted in his latest Wildcat (Warcat) review has stated that all bullpups have too loud of a hammer strike for him except for FX guns. I have to take Ted's words with skepticism since I believe he is being sponsored by FX now and is probably biased to say the least. So any first hand knowledge of how loud hammer noise and muzzle report of the RM5 would be appreciated. Any RM5 owners in SF bay area willing to let me hear what is really sounds like would by very useful.

As for the Sniper HR and other semi-bull pups I believe all of them would need to add a LDC, making them longer and muzzle heavier not meeting my requirement of length, lightness and balance for off hand shooting

I think the Impact meets most of my requirements, but I believe that I won't be happy if it when it starts to leak. Nothing like putting the gun in the closet for a few weeks and then getting a raccoon raid only to find out that the gun has leaked all of its air. As said in many other area, it isn't if the Impact will leak, but when and how often. :)

I believe the R5M won't have any of the Impact issues, but is it quiet enough out of the box and how bad is the hammer noise.
