“Goodtogo”I’ve posted targets for Joe to see where I do long range shooting a little different. I like to leave my scopes alone for long range shots that I don’t really need for hunting or shooting. I have many large pieces of cardboard, so I put a target(stick on 2 inch circle) near the top of or the long piece of cardboard. I shoot 3-5 shoots at that target. Then I go back to the cardboard and put a matching target circle over where the first 3-5 shots impacted. Then I shoot my groups aiming at the top circle but they group on the lower circle. So I can check 100 yard groups without touching my scope.

I have done the same at longer distances with PB rifles. What I’m checking for is to see if the rifle can group at a certain distance. If it can then I “might” adjust my scope or not. This is a easy way to test if your last tweak to your rifle helped without changing your scope.

If a rifle won’t group well enough to hunt at 100 yards then there is no reason to start setting your scopes to anything other than your normal hunting distance?

I’ve done it that way myself.  There are plenty of ways to skin that kitty.  I was just offering an option and some data.

I’d like to meet the man who is hunting anything humanely at 100 yards with a springer.  Either you can’t hit it, or you can’t kill it.

Here are my targets for this evening (40 yards).  Shot with my D48 (tuned by John in PA) shooting JSB 15.89 at 725 fps for about 18.5 fpe.  The mosquitoes were big enough to carry off my dog. =)

    Three dimes and Two nickles
Average group size for five five shot groups 1.574 MOA  (0.659 inches)

These are my groups with TX200, at thirty yards. One groups was three shot in exact same hole and then I changed my hold on last two. Can you say, CHOKEDhttp://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd391/mrjohns/DSC_0218%201024×685.jpg

Nice groups oldspook. And 50 yards is my limit shooting at game with my springers(but for me springers are mainly paper punchers). And that’s only my tx200.

But I have a rifle shooting 4.5mm rounds that I use at times at 100+ yards on game. But the only spring is in the trigger group.  ;) It can be fun setting your rifles scope zero at 50 yards and at 100 yards its the same poi. Just look at it as a 17grain pellet going 2,500 fps. (I just use it on the  mosquitoes that try to carry off dogs) :)

I’ve got an old H&R that was a .22 Hornet in a previous life.  I reamed it for .22 Kilborne Hornet and hand loaded for it for a couple of years (40 grain VMax at 2750).  Great medicine on GHogs out to about 250 yards and not so loud that it drives the countryside bat guano crazy.  That is a big plus east of the Blue Ridge.

OK, here is a 10-shot group at 30 yards with my RWS 48.  The red ring is a little under 1 1/4 inches.

And I know it’s not a paper group, but I manged to hit each of these spinners 5-times each without missing.  I was ALL SMILES When I nailed that little one the 5th time!

This distance was 67 yards  🙂

This is what it looks like through a 12x scope:

FWB300S, kneeling position off-hand, 10 meters, 5 shots. I’m getting better at it. And no scope on this baby, just diopter sights. :D

Well when they say “doping the wind” are they talking about where you aim or me behind the rifle?  ;)

So it was a little windy right to left. My problem was it would be windy one shot and not so much the next. So much for the ribbons I was tying on the barbwire fence that the target was against. The misses to the left was wind and the misses to the right was poor doping as the wind would come and go.
So this target was at 55ft 2inches. The rifle was a fwb 300s shooting exacts 7.33 around 640fps.

At the range this morning, 30 shots @ 10 meters with the Feinwerkbau 300S, off-hand shooting from prone position. Vintage match rifles are seriously fun to shoot!   :D

Thanks Joe, I’m improving still. Next week I hope to shoot in the mid 280’s so I can shoot competitions with this baby. Would be so much fun to beat those expensive high-tech PCP air rifles during a match with a vintage low-tech springer. :P Target Scan is a great app. Offers a lot of analytics tools to see how you’re progressing (or not), with heat maps and bar graphs. Must-have tool for every competition shooter!

Man, I haven’t had so much fun in years, since I got my hands on this 40 year old FWB. I understand your passion for these rifles mate!

I shot this one-hole group from a bipod when I was adjusting my diopter sights this morning at 10 meters. It looks as if it’s one pellet that went through, but in fact it’s three. I’m amazed with the accuracy of these things.

Looking forward to seeing your/more groups here.

Nice shooting! It’s almost boring how accurate those things are, wouldn’t you agree?
