Quick afternoon 100 yard trigger therapy

Late last night FedEx dropped off some goodies for my impact, obviously it took me no time to install them. Spent all morning on web meetings and just feel like crap, got the bug my son got from school so feeling a bit under the weather. At 1pm I said I’m going to use my sick card and take a couple of hours off and go shoot my impact. rushed over and realized I forgot my Allen wrench set again so stuck with not the right m tune but I just wanted some trigger time with the new goodies and get rid of my 26.8 grain .25 slugs I bought a long while back.

it turned out to be a beautiful day at the range……except for the swirling 5-8mph wind. Very unpredictable even with improvised wind flag/bird strip. obviously every thing was over an inch but had a good time slinging lead down range and getting a feel for the hold sensitivity, impact is still no where near as comfortable as my GRS crown in my bench rest setup.

Here is my impact with ST lower rail and cheek riser. Yup, I even forgot my moderator! 🤣

I had a tight group at 100 until the wind decided NOPE! Pretty much all my groups today.

I shot this 4 shot group on the qualifying target so I can use the 300 yard range, nothing to write home about but good enough to get me i to the 300 yard range!!! Woot!!!

Overall a beautiful day and some trigger therapy to make me feel a bit better. Nothing great thanks to the wind but heavy liner clearly can shoot any .25 NSA slugs pretty well. Ordered a dedicated set of Allen wrench for the range bag so I won’t forget them again! Still need to tune my impact and clear out last remaining 26.8g, 34g and 36 grain .25 slugs, hopefully by the time I get to my 34.9 grain stash NSA will have them back in stock again. Really looking forward to the 300 yard range!

Thanks everyone! The therapy certainly worked and I feel much better today! hahaha

@Flintsack: 300 yards might take some time, need to print a presentable group at 200 yards first. Getting my range setup together and need to fine tune my gun for the 34.9g slugs. One thing I do realized yesterday is I need to shoot with less magnification so I can see the "wind flag" better. Need to employ/practice your tip of centering the target, I finally got what you are talking about when I tried the peep hole sight. Thanks again for all your tips, they are very insightful! The more I learn the more I realize there is more to learn, this is what makes this "sport" fun.

Hey Q, how are you bud? All is well with you and the family I hope.

Nice shooting! I love the 34.9gr. NSA slugs too. I actually have a really hard time deciding between the 34.9gr NSA, 34.0gr Varmint Knockers and a couple of the Zan Projectiles, the 35gr and 37gr. Every time I make any little adjustment to my gun, it seems to make one of the slugs shoot just a hair better than the one I had been shooting. I go round and round between the three but they all shoot so great that the difference is nominal, usually hard to see the difference. I need to pick one and just go with it. Regardless of which slug I’m using, all three love to be shot at 945-950fps.

It’s crazy how far slugs have come over the years but particularly the past three years. It’s amazing. The other day, I was looking at a photo of the very first 3’x5’ target I shot when I decided to do the extensive slug testing with a .25 cal. LW, LW Poly and all of the FX liners. It was at 50yds and I shot it with the FX liners…The groups all averaged 3-5” or more, almost always because of the one dreaded flier in every group. Then the dedicated FX slug liners came out with different twists and lengths, then better slugs, more slug liners, more and even better slugs and more slugs and more slugs! I keep saying I’m going to quit slug testing and then a new slug comes out and another. It never ends! It sure is a great excuse for therapy though! The more the better!

Have a great evening.

Thanks Stoti!!! Hope all is well with you and your family!

I know it’s a tough one but since I want to get out well pass 100 yards I must change my old ways of switch ammo just about every day and “settle” down with just the best one for a while. That way I can focus on getting it fine tuned and then learn the wind drift since all of them behaves a little different in the wind. At 100 yards most of them won’t differ more than 1/2 inch under the same condition but out further things change and get more difficult so I’ll have to work on learning the 34.9 grain.

I ran twist rate/stability calculator and the heavy can shoot the 34.9g and 38.9g slugs with excellent stability, wish it had a little faster twist rate but maybe next version. 😅

I know what you mean but I have come to the conclusion that the gun is very good, time to work on my skills, I’m no where near the shooter some folks here are but that means lots to learn and look forward to!

Well, I’m still sick from the cold I got from my kids. Still coughing so the wife being the germaphobe she is doesn’t want me playing with the kids even though I got the cold from the kids. Well that got me thinking, weather is nice and I could use more trigger therapy! Ordered a heavy liner in .22 for the crown so been wanting to try it out and got some .216 slugs to get rid of, bought them for my TJ barrel but the TJ barrel especially doesn’t like the 20 grain. Had my expectation set very low because FX barrels are known to shoot .217 well but hey it’s a good way to kill some time and get some trigger time.

Got to the range around 1:30 and the wind is swirling as usual. Zeroed at 50 yards but the wind made it hard, got it pretty dead on because once a while the wind dies and it’s spot on, encourage by the 50 yard results I switched to 100 yards. With the wind swirling at 4-7 mph it was very challenging to get under 2 inch. Wasn’t 100% sure if it’s the gun or the wind or me I figured I’ll just throw lead down range in this spectacular weather…..minus the wind.

THEN around 3:30 the wind slowly calmed down, still switching/swirling constantly but a bit more predictable with the wind flag/strip I had out. Not 100% sure if my gun is really dialed/tuned or not I figure will just try to shoot some groups adjusting for the wind. At least by then most of the adjustment is around 1/4-3/4 mil with about 1/4 mil up and down deviation as suppose to 1 Mil with 1/2 mil up and down deviation at around 2pm. Then I realized wow this heavy liner sure shoot the 20 grain really well!!! Shocking well if I get the wind correct or if the wind just stay the same between shots.

This is a 8 shot group with 5 shots cluster at 0.58 inch, C2C is 1.4 inch, not bad for just learning to read the wind! I had to hold both left over and right lower with 90% of my groups.

best 5 shot group I managed to shoot today, also some adjustment for the wind, about 1.3 inch C2C.

I managed this 3 shot group and ran out of ammo……dared not to shoot near it again! I know it’s only 3 shots but this is 100 yards in the wind with me making some correction for the wind, C2C is 0.54 inch!!! Super stoked about this one even though I’m sure good amount of luck was involved.

right before the range close I ran out of 20 grain slugs and packed up. Feeling pumped about the prospect of shooting beyond 100 yards, even got my official 300 yard range card today! what a great way to start the weekend even though I’m still sick. Although I’m kinda liking being sick like today……😂🤣🤣

Wish everyone a great weekend!
