question on tournaments..

What type of event are you considering? There is Field Target, Bench Rest(25m, and EBR). Also air rifle silhouette and 10m rifle and air pistol.

Generally no slugs in benchrest matches, modified rifles okay, shoot against stock rifles. Our club age does not come into play, only juniors have their own class.

EBR has their own rules and classes. Took me a while to figure out how many classes there are in each disciplines

Oh, and I’m well over 60 and nothing gives me more pleasure than whipping younger bucks!

As too FIELD TARGET .... The MAXIMUM power allowed period is 20 ft lbs. Without getting too into the class breakdowns, some classes will shoot at >12 ft lbs and some at >20 ft lbs. As to SLUGS .. NONE ! ... As to modified rifles, Yes tho mods allowed vary by class.

Read the rules. .25 is ok, though not advantageous. So rarely used.

I most likely have no idea what I’m doing, but saw the max fpe and used a calculator online to come up with fpe on my marauder and figured it was out based on that.

Correct, the WEIGHT of pellet and SPEED at muzzle calculate to muzzle energy figure.

The sad truth is as pellet weights / caliber go's up, the speed in which you must shoot drops.

In the 25 especially beings for most the lightest "Accurate" pellet would be a JSb King at 25.4 grains .... to be >20 ft lbs the speed can be no faster than 595 fps.

At that speed your trajectory of the pellet is VERY arched and range estimation to drop said pellet into the targets kill zone CRITICAL to having an exact range or you will simply miss !

Also the bigger a pellets diameter, better is the chance it will hit the rim / edges of kill zone ( What we call a split ) having target seldom fall. A smaller caliber pellet such as the .177 is better suited as well using the same power limits of >20 ft lbs can be shot near 920 fps !! which is substantially flatter in trajectory as well.



We seldom see .22's either tho a few do well with them. In recent years there has been some pretty awesome results by those shooting the near obsolete .20 caliber raising many an eyebrow, that this near forgotten bastard caliber may actually be the ideal FT pellet at >20 ft lb Field Target competition.

Yep! Field Target rules are at AAFTA.org, and silhouette and 10 meter rules are on the NRA website. If you want to compete at 100 yds with air rifles then I suppose bench rest is for you. I know nothing about benchrest.

Best thing to do is to attend competition of your choice.

After checking AAFTA and WFTF rules, there is no mention that slugs are not allowed in Field Target. As long as the projectile is made of lead, or similar alloy, such as zinc and similar soft non lead alloys, they are allowed. I know more than one competitor that has used them, as long as the projectile stays within its 20 ft lb / 12ft lb power levels, whichever the case may be.

Thanks for the responses folks. I had a long week of flood prep for a storm that thankfully petered out. I bought the .25 because it was for a good price and thought it would be fun prone at the 100. It has not failed at that, and I have a bit of customizing to do for fun.

I picked up a 1701p a few weeks ago on free ship Friday with our discount code. Finally got to slip a Primary Arms red dot on it yesterday and shot my 25 yard pop can plate until I was tired, what a nice shooting pistol. I got it on the 3” plate at 50 yards only once, I’ll have to put it on paper to get the hold over in my minds picture.

After my toy fund recoups I may have to keep my eye open for a nice 177 rifle, quite a bit cheaper to fling the tiny pellets and I can see the risks of split shots vs. advantages of flatter shooting between the calibers. This will be a while now.
