question about Taipan regulator

I have a Veteran Standard in .22, and its velocity consistency is excellent. A friend has a new Veteran Long in .25, and all indications suggest he has a reg problem. As a matter of interest, I'm curious, how many folks have had problems with their Taipan regulator? The design and build of the reg appears consistent with the rifle, very robust and reliable. But, stuff happens, and maybe he is victim of the rare problem, or, maybe my positive experience is the exception. Just curious of others' experience with the Taipan reg.

There have been reports of Taipan Veteran Regulators not giving acceptable levels of regulation stated by numerous members including Dairyboy who sold his.

I would first let the dealer know about this concern just to document it by date time and who you spoke to over the phone Then shoot it at least 500 rounds to break it in and if the regulator does not improve and work as it should have him send it in under warranty if it affects the accuracy in a negative way.

I don't definitively know what @elh0102's symptoms are BUT I'd wager inconsistent fps when attempting to tune it over a chrony to fine tune it. Mine did have plenty of shots through it - couple 3,4 maybe more of tins of pellets through it and I could never get it better than 18 or so ES over 10 shot strings. What it did do *extremely consistently* was shoot a shot at ( I'm just making up numbers here ) 936 fps. The very next shot would be 880. 3rd --> 930, 4th --> 883, 5th - 931

↑ You see the pattern up there. Every other shot - either fast or slow. *That* was highly predictable and nothing I did would alleviate it. I tried swapping out the stock hammer spring for the heavier "truck spring" as I've seen it referred to in here. Cleaned and lubed the barrel as well as ammo, dialed the hammer spring up and down all over the place - I finally got brave enough to dig into the gun (tear it apart) and muck with the reg per a short (useful) video that, I believe, @Vetmx posted on how he adjusted his. I put it back together - filled it and let it sit for a bit ( validate no leaks ) and then shot it over my chrony again. Same thing. Fast, slow, fast, slow.

I bought a huma. I've not had an issue since - it is incredibly tight on speed and consistent from shot to shot easily within 5-7 fps (maybe even better than that) over any 10 shot string now. As @Odoyle mentions above - there were several complaints about this - myself included. I love the gun - it's actually my most used one.

I think Dairyboy had a .177 that did the exact same thing. What made it even weirder was it was consistent at being inconsistent. If that ever would have happened to my gun it would be Huma time. After I tried to fix it first, what the heck, your going to replace it anyway. It’s interesting that you didn’t see anything wrong inside the reg. My guess is the spool and the edges of the belleville washers need polished. Rough edges on the washers can make them hang up and give you inconsistent reg settings from shot to shot.

Jim, your experience mirrors my friend's issue perfectly. Although the Taipan reg is very good, there is always the possibility of a bad one, as you and he have apparently been victim. After watching a couple of videos, I actually prefer the Taipan design over the Huma. But, if you have one that isn't working, something must be done.

It was @dairyboy who actually instilled the confidence in me that I could take it apart. I'd mentioned (someplace) that I had taken my m-rod completely apart several times and re-built it from scratch. He told me that if I could do that then I could also work on the Taipan. Turns out he was right - it's actually a pretty simple gun. Me like simple. :)

Yeah my .177 had issues shown from the dealer...but over the chrony on mine show it was working just fine?? I put quite a few pellets through it first before testing but did work. Did buy a huma but never installed it. But very easy guns to work on. But I have heard of others also having other guys having the consistently inconsistent as well

Regs on all five Taipans that I have owned = zero issues

Thanks Matt, that has been my experience as well with two. After watching Earnest Rowe's video of cleaning and adjusting the Taipan regulator, I think it might actually be my preference over the Huma. As with the rest of the rifle, it is well designed and robust. Of course, anything touched by a human is subject to error or mistake, and it appears my friend simply got one with a bad or damaged component. It's easy to remove and clean, but not something one should need to do on a new rifle. And I learned from installing a Huma reg in my Royale, without a reg tester, you spend a lot of time taking apart and putting back, since it's all trial and error.

I can remove and clean the reg successfully, and may well do that after a few more shot string tests, because of the Earnest video and because I know that a TINY bit of travel makes a large difference. The Altaros reg for my TalonSS only allowed for approx. 1/3 turn to go from 100 to 150bar. The Artemis PP700SA is the same. Important NOT to move the brass wheel with notches that actually compresses the washers when dis-assembling or assembling, unless you want to.

Gotta figure what the screw size is that Earnest used to anchor so the nut and 'bolt' don't rotate together.

Just wanted to share my experience with my Veteran standard in .25. It came to me from Talon Tunes tuned to JSB 25 grain at around 905fps. It shot great but I bought the HST adjuster and just had to play with it at all different speeds and projectiles. After awhile, I noticed the FPS jumping every other shot from lower to higher, fairly consistently so I wondered what the hell was going on. I figured I didn’t touch the regulator so the HST must not have been in harmony with it. I brought the FPS back close to where Tony at Talon Tunes must have had it when he produced the original shot count and it is back shooting consistently every shot again. Also, the muzzle blast sounds a little shorter and more crisp. So maybe in my case it doesn’t like the HST being to far out of tune with the reg.
