There's a lot of questions in your topic, but I'll try to answer a few-If you live within city limits shooting airguns in your backyard may be illegal-the only way to know is to check the laws in your area. As far as I know (at least in my state) you need a hunting license to shoot any wildlife whether for food or pest control. You can definitely get into legal trouble and be fined for ignoring laws and game regulations!

Shooting for "pest control" doesn't exempt you from local, state or federal laws.

For me, I need a small game license to shoot pigeons, starlings, sparrows, skunks, red squirrels and coyotes. Same with crows and raccoons during hunting season.

For raccoons out of season, they must be causing or about to cause damage. For crows out of season, they have to fall under the Federal Depredation order. I can also shoot blackbirds, cowbirds and grackles under the same order.

All other hunting regulations need to be OR should be followed.

In NY besides needing a hunting license you can’t shoot within 500 ft of any residence other than your own without the homeowners permission. You need to also check with the local police just to make sure there are no local ordinances you need to be in compliance with.

If all else fails, read the instructions! In this case that means your local game laws... rather than depending on OPINIONS.

My utility company operates in 6 western states and we have annual avian training. The trainers make it perfectly clear that ALL birds except for starlings, house sparrows and rock pigeons are protected by some sort of federal or state laws. Do your homework and stay out of the clink.

In Wisconsin, you don't need a license to shoot certain pests on your property. I was just researching it yesterday. However, I live in town, and local laws prevent shooting guns of any kind within the city limits. I emailed my local police department, and they were kind enough to reply and let me know.

Here's a link for the Minnesota DNR website, you should be able to find out what you need to know, as far as hunting seasons and dealing with pests on your property. For instance, you can take rabbits on your own property, at any time without license, as long as local laws allow.

be sure you check your state and municipal laws many cities and small towns alike have laws against firing a pellet or bb gun for any reason inside the city and state limits some even include sling shots and arrows.

Yes, check your local laws, every place is different. In my case I hunt iguanas, and here they are considered invasive species, it’s allowed to take them year round without license, in private property. Here are the rules I need to follow
