Quality hunting scope

95% of my shooting is only hunting/pesting. I've been very very happy with the scopes I have being a SWFA 10x42 and Discovery 10x44HD. Oh and also the Discovery 4-20x50FFP I have no real need but for some reason I'm feeling like upgrading to an even nicer scope. What do you guys use out there? I'm guessing around $600. Ive owned an SWFA 3-15x42 and Athlon Argos BTR 6-24x50. Those are the highest end scopes I've used. Are scopes like the Athlon Midas Tac really that much better?

Gen1 Argos BTR are decent for the money, the Gen2 Argos BTR has closed the gap and is a very nice scope now, and the TAC to me is at least 3 times the scope of the Gen1 Argos BTR.

The TAC just exudes quality, it feels and performs like a $1000+ scope. Heck I just got a Athlon ETR in, which is a $1200 scope, it's slightly better in most ways but the difference isn't huge, that's how well made a TAC is.

Preferences in features like SFP or FFP, reticles, length, and weight, are a personal preference thing, everything has tradeoffs. Honestly I like the 6-24 TAC more than the 4-16 TAC because even at 16x the tiny dot of the 4-16 isn't easy to see. I sold both in favor of the Gen2 Ares BTR which has my favorite all .2 mil reticle but it doesn't focus below 25Y, well I could focus closer but it'd be at 10x or so at 22Y, which I'm good with since this scope will be on a 25 cal Impact.

All the scopes you mentioned and two of the others in this thread, aren't in same league as the TAC. Arken and Meopta probably are ???

Might look at open box warrantied scopes, get an xtra $200 for your money. Don't look at NightForce it will ruin your budget. What ever for hunting I like FFP 3-14 or 5-20 mildot with IR. I am looking at the new Element scopes when they are released. If you don't already have a night vision scope the ATN could be an option. Not what I would call high end but serves the perpose well.

I look for very clear optics in a lightweight shorter scope, most of the times Leupold scopes do that for me,I also like the Sightron scopes...the Nikons I have also fit the bill ..yes I think the Athlon Midas scopes would also be a good bet....I do not know how much they weigh though.

I buy most of my stuff used and in excellent condition, check out those scopes for resale value and because Leupold is a long time maker resale value holds up for them....I should also mention Burris and some of the better Bushnell scopes are also very good....

,I want to be able to hold my scoped rifle in a study position for a offhand shot, fast pointablity...thus light weight with a fast sight picture, for thatdo not need over 8 power...huh butt sure is nice to be able to rest rifle and this is where more power can be used...so variable light weight scope say form 6to18 power with a 42-44 bell....more bell more weight.....also better optics don't be needing big bell....

Yes Meopta make good optics....

so it would seems that Midas Tac has the most bang for your buck, especially when compared with the ETR?

That pretty much sums it up, especially if you want 10Y focus.

Both the ETR and Ares BTR 4.5-27 are 25Y focus.

But the 2.5-15 Ares BTR does have 10Y focus, and it has a slightly thicker reticle that is all .2 mil, which is actually useful on lower magnification. There's still some Gen1's around on sale if you shop around. The new Gen2's are excellent, much better turrets ,etc.

i was thinking about the Ares ETR. Now I'm thinking Midas TAC 6x24 XD

How does it compare with Arken EP4? feature wise they seem similar so i guess down to glass quality?

If you don't need illumination, want to save weight and money, the TAC will serve you well. The only complaint I had with my 6-24 Tac was the reticle mixed with .2's and .5's, that's just a personal preference thing, otherwise it was a great scope.

I haven't played with Arken yet, I saw from the reviews that it's a higher quality scope for the price. Questionable whether it has better glass or not??? It doesn't have much of a track record yet, and over on Snipershide there were some with problems that needed to be fixed but the customers were taken care of as far as know. If I liked the reticle I'd order one just to see what they are like but I'm too picky and don't have money to do stuff like that.
