Pulsar .22 Review and initial impressions

EDIT#1: see my post further down about the leak that developed after this informal review.

EDIT#2: No longer leaking keep reading thread for details.

Well, just joined the forum and this is my first post. There are too few reviews of the pulsar so I thought I would throw in my 2 cents. I have had my .22 synthetic pulsar for a month now. I have put right at 2000 rounds through her. So far, my experience with this rifle has been 100% positive. I have tried the following pellets:
jsb 18.13gr 5.52 head size
jsb 15.89gr 5.52 head size
h&n barracuda match 21.14gr 5.52 head
size
jsb pred. polymags
h&n field target trophy 14.66gr Head size
5.53
AirArms Diablo Field heavy 18gr 5.52 head
size
AirArms Diabo Field 16gr 5.51 head size
Beeman Field Target Special 14.66 gr head
size???
Crosman Premiere 14.3gr domed brown
box.
Out of the above mentioned pellets, my pulsar clearly shoots the jsb 18.13gr the best........and high power yields the tightest groups with this pellet. On high power I chrono'd the 18.13 at a high of 925fps and a low of 915fps in an informal load and shoot off my back porch. This shot string was the first thing I did when I recieved the rifle. I lost count but that shot string was either 70 or 80 shots approximately. Didn't record or write anything down......just wanted to see if she was performing. She was.
I got my pulsar with a huggett moderator and I'm using an atlas bipod with excellent results. She's got a 3x12x50mm hawke airmax 30 sitting on top. I live in Louisiana about 100ft above sea level.....temperature in the 90s right now. Humidity is always high/above 80%. 920fps on the 18.13gr jsb shoots sub half inch groups........every bloody time off the bench/off the atlas. I shoot unsorted....unlubed....out of the magazine. Just a quick visual to discard any deformed skirts. I have a 100yrd shooting lane in my backyard cut through a dense pine forest......NO WIND. The bench was formed out of concrete 20 yrs ago and will never move from its location. I have several 5 shot groups that literally look like 2 shots touching at 50yrds. Yesterday I shot 6 groups 5 shots each. One group was .5 inch ctc, the other 5 groups all sub half inch averaging 5/16 to 3/8 inch ctc. Seriously, this is the first rifle I have ever shot that might be more accurate than me within its typical shooting range. I shoot .68 caliber paintballs off golf tees at varying unknown distances scattered all over my backyard....ranging out to 50 yards. They're 5/8 inch diameter. Couple of buddies come over and shoot too......fun way to practice sitting, kneeling, and prone. I shoot sitting most of the time at those paintballs from 10 to 50 yards. I can hit those paintballs sitting....at 50 yards with very very few misses. There is no change in zero from the bench on sandbags vs bench atlas vs sitting etc.
The rifle has yet to jam, cycles fast and smooth. Trigger is awesome. Rifle looks very short without moderator, but looks menacing and well proportioned with the moderator. Im a function over form guy. The moderator makes the whole gun look right, and everyone I shoot with agrees. The rifle is insanely silent with the huggett. Its backyard friendly without the huggett due to baffles within the barrel. But the combination of the 2 working together is ridiculously silent. All my above groups are shot with the huggett. The rifle balances well offhand. The weight of the rifle is in the back behind the pistol grip.
Lastly, I have been asked by my friends if the rifle was worth the money and whether or not I regret not getting the wolverine B hilite. My answer is this, as long as I have no problems out of the electronics........I have no regrets and prefer the pulsar over the wolverine b hilite. If the electeonics ever fail me, then I will regret not getting the wolverine. Right now.....I feel I made the right choice. The balance of the pulsar being rearward makes a very good offhand shooter. Being able to mount the bipod way out towards the end of the rifle has to improve accuracy as well.
I have shot precision powder guns my whole life. Im 36 and used to shoot competitions all over the country when I was a teenager. I had a Clark Custom built 10/22 that I won a national match with at the Whittington Center in Raton NM years ago. My pulsar shoots just as well at 50 yrds and on any given group could actually outshoot the Clark.
My 2 cents.

plinkerOut of curiosity, in todays market, how much would the Clark custom built 10/22 cost. That may give us a relative piece about our expenditures. Haha. Or it might make be buy the Clark 10/22 as well.

Good point. Mr. Clark hasn't hand built guns in a long time now. He passed on his knowledge to his son who now picks up where he left off. Man its been probably 24 yeara ago but I think that clark was somewhere around the 1200 mark back then. Today there is no telling what a new one would cost.

I'm very leery of Daystate's electronic guns. I think it was a massive gamble on their part to go that way. I can't argue with the effectiveness of these gun's management of air and the shot strings they produce however. Maybe this is the future. If the electronic guns prove to be more accurate ... CONSISTANTLY ... I will probably become a convert. The most frustrating thing about airguns is wandering POI and a lot of people have the problem.

"bill_dd97"According to an inflation calculator I found $1200 in 1992 would be over $2000 today. So, the Pulsar doesn't cost much more than the Clark 10/22 did.
That assumes that air rifles and firearms prices have only gone up in line with inflation. I can't say I know a huge amount about precision firearms but many of the ones I have seen online recently have been way more expensive than $2000 for something custom built that you could win competitions with.

Okay.......as luck would have it she has sprung a leak somewhere just shy of 30 days and 2000 rounds. I put her up around 2pm at 185bar. Figured I would shoot her down to 160 this afternoon when it cooled off. Pulsar was at 160 at 5pm so I didnt shoot it. Its alot cooler in the house but it raised my eyebrow. It was 130bar at 6pm. Dry fired a few times on low power to make sure the valve was seated. Went and ate chinese food with misses. now 820pm and its at 109bar. Guess I spoke to soon. She hasnt leaked a mosquito fart until this afternoon.

Well thats reassuring.......do you still own it? I dont want to be replacing internal orings every 2000 rounds. I love the rifle but this is my first daystate. If I cant fix it and or I have to send it back.......Im sending it back permanent. Will get AOA on the phone in the morning and see what my options are. They probably will not want me fooling with it unless I want to void my warranty. I know I could fix it tho. But..........a leak already. Does not instill confidence. Here I am worried about the electronics and theyre good to go.

Okay.....new update. I used some soapy water to diagnose the leak area. The male foster fitting was good but the barrel bubbled. Therefore, I knew I was looking at something getting on the valve oring. I figured some microscopic thing got on the oring, probably left over from manufacture/assembly. I got up this morning and filled her to 230 bar and dry fired about 40 times on high power.....didnt actually count. She has stayed put at 190bar now for 3 hours steady not losing a single bar. Whatever was there is obviously blown out/cleared........either shot out the barrel or residing in a baffel somewhere. I will pull a simple green patch through the barrel later to ensure all clear but the problem seems to have resolved at this point. Only time will tell if I have a slow leak....I doubt its leaking at all now. I really did not want to send her back.....my original post outlines why. The damn thing is crazy accurate. I will update again in 24 hours or so.

Thanks Blustone. I love the rifle so much I believe I was prepared to work through it myself after sleeping on it. The only thing I dont like about the pulsar is the case it came in. Its very VERY hard foam.....and doesnt fit inside with huggett. Will be getting a pelican case soon for her. Everything I own worth some coin gets a pelican case.......cheapest insurance there is. If I ever have to send it off for repair.....she will go in a pelican case. If anyone needs a pulsar factory case I would literally give it away. It is better than a cardboard box tho for initial shipping/purchase so I guess it did serve a temporary purpose.
