Prove Me Wrong! Big Bore Airguns are DESTROYING the Sport of Airgunning?

Will it ruin our sport?nope won't happen but it can possibly change it for the worse?yes it probably will..

Just think about it,all these videos showing high powered airguns killing hogs, deer even bear will eventually catch the eye of gun haters and laws will possibly get passed to consider airguns same as firearms.I have heard folks talking about airguns being people lethal now, videos are up showing just how devastating they are even out passed 400 yards.

If they ever do lump airguns into firearms territory here comes paperwork, tax stamps even possible background checks to even purchase one. That would mean our beloved ldc/moderators would become a pain to even buy one.Im not saying big bores or high-power airguns are bad by any means but I do think that with the way things are going it will inevitably bring about changes to our sport in the future. The pellet guns of old we're more ment for Young folks to shoot a can or kill a small pest animal but now we are talking big bores like 308 to 50 caliber capable of killing most all game animals. There just seems to be a large push for more and more power shooting slugs .I mean if it can shoot slugs more accurate than a pellet at much greater distances is it even a pellet gun anymore?I love our sport and honestly don't think big bores are bad by any means but it won't take but one dipstick to do something really really stupid with one and our sport could be changed very easily by lawmakers.

Just food for thought really .

Agree with this. It is simply new and broader attention to the hobby. Might not change anything, might change a lot of things. This from a "tree hugger" who probably owns more firearms than most here and more air guns than many. Probably everyone here knows what SHOULD happen with the issue but no one knows what WILL happen.

Pretty sure the majority of people view air guns as children toys making 3-6 FPE...not 300-600 (large big bore power)...once enough people are informed (likely requiring mass media's attention and or lobbying), its game over IMO. My city already lumps them together...if you're caught firing within the city (any city in my state) you will be charged with discharging of a firearm...you literally have to treat your air gun as if its a fire arm in any modern US city. The 'sport' already has been lumped together with any other lethal weapon.

The only reason many people get away with half of the things they do in their backyard is because of remote areas, reduced muzzle reports due to using air as a propellant, or ignorance.

Sorry no offence maybe I used the wrong wording

Conservationist | Definition of Conservationist by Merriam-Webster

English Language Learners Definition of conservationist. : someone who works to protect animals, plants, and natural resources or to prevent the loss or waste of natural resources : a person who is involved in conservation. As is most (outdoorsmen) hunters who spend thousands on minerals, licences food plots etc. And who use big bores to take game ethically.

Tree Hugger | Definition of Tree Hugger by Merriam-Webster

English Language Learners Definition of tree hugger. disapproving : someone who is regarded as foolish or annoying because of being too concerned about protecting trees, animals, and other parts of the natural world from pollution and other threats. Also one sided views most are not firearm owners (with exception of corse) and believe all outdoorsman are wrong. The more pcp owners there are the stronger the sport is. Big bores small bores and daisy's. Developing big bores increase the quality of small bores and vise versa. Educate everyone you can so as to not end up with one sided views. This is the same argument over ASSAULT WEAPONS no such thing 17 cal to 50 bmg = firearm. Air gun 177 to 20mm is air gun. Springers = Springers

England is the best place in the World to live because we have the Queen. That makes up for our pathetic gun laws.

And if I weren't English, next in line for the Earldom of Sibertsworld, I would choose to live in Texas.

But as for bore...? Who cares? Shoot what ever gun you like.

I get the sense that many of the English outdoorsmen are hillbillies at heart. My guess is that Texas would receive you with open arms and a warm heart. 😀

Hillbilly is meant in the finest terms and is meant as a term of endearment and pride, not a derogatory term so I hope it is taken as intended.

very perceptive post. legislators have a way of stepping in where they think they're needed.

many places already place airguns in the same category as firearms and regulate them as such.

The positive results of big bore airgun promotion far outweighs any risks from regulations run amok. It is because of the wider exposure of big bore airguns that freer airgun hunting laws are sweeping the nation. Look how quick states are amending their regulations to allow airgun hunting. Although the logistics of these changes are seen too mostly by pro-airgun lobbyists, the climate that makes these changes possible is due to the positive exposure big bore airguns have received in social media.

Haters are gonna hate, and there's a subset of the population and lawmakers that will always hate on any weapon in the hands of the citizenry. But that shouldn't cause lawful air gunners to hide our airguns from public view. Positive public view is what vests new people in the hobby. The more people vested into airguns, the harder it will be for draconian regulations to be emplaced.

Make no mistake, non-airgunner shooters who see the power of big bores are left with a positive, not a negative, impression.

I'm more concerned about full-auto airguns attracting attention than I am big bore airguns.

I also live in IL where airguns over .18 caliber are regulated as firearms. I've been trying for three years to get our politicians to change that, with no success. This year I can't even get a reply on the matter. If our (Chicago) politicians get their way we will soon need to submit fingerprints with our FOID to own a .22 airgun. (The amendment to the shell bill is already written and proposed.)

BULLFROG you are exactly right. You really could turn this whole topic on it's head and say small bores are going to cause problems for big bores from people taking game with to small of a cal. And also thinking they can shoot in neighborhood back yards. I think everyone should be able to have and shoot what they want safely and ethically. This is the first year here in TEXAS for air rifles on whitetail, to me that's going forward not backwards. Big bores opened that door for us. But of coarse we are talking about the great state of TEXAS. Hey CLANCY 2 requirements for coming to TEXAS you must vote and you have to be able to whistle Dixie.

Kinda like saying big 4x4s are the reason all the regs on automobiles, They burn more fuel than is required to get from point A to B so everyone needs elect cars. NOOOOO hate to turn it political but Vote the right way and teach our young people responsibility and respect is exactly what we need to do. God gave us our rights and we need to keep them and not hide under rocks and let the crazy's make laws to infringe on our rights. Corvettes, camero's etc go over 100 mph so we need to ban them or regulate the speed you can only drive 75 mph any way legally. See were this is going? I didn't know pcp's existed till seeing Keith Warren shooting pigs with a dragon claw. This was the most expensive video I have ever seen in my life, but because of that I purchased several guns, bullet's compressor, tanks fittings etc. Making it possible for pcp manufactures bullet makers tank makers etc. to continue their business and making profits. Sorry bout the preaching just my 2 cents.

Hay bright boy ever hear of a thing called the gas guzzler tax?

Now you are lucky as "big 4x4's" and trucks in general are exempt from these regs.....kinda cool how guberment works ain't it. They can pick and choose what they want, when they want, and how they want.

Good idea keep you head in the sand and it 10 years tops....less depending on what happens in 2020 and check back with me.

It's cool, I'm very much a hillbilly! Camo baseball caps, long goatee beard, Cadillac 3 playing in the car, favourite tipple is JD. If I ever moved stateside it'd be Texas for sure!

Cherokee read the original post then mine and maybe you can see what I was referring to. Also I think in just about all my post on THIS SUBJECT in short I have said educating our young people and voting. You like less regulations and fewer gun laws then you vote accordingly. Just complaining and griping does nothing. No head in the sand here.

Don't worry, the antis only want "reasonable" gun laws.

As for "big bore" air guns being adequate for big game, every body knows what great stopping guns .22 long rifle, .22 WRM, .38 S&W special are. Energy? .22 LR = 100-150 FPE, .22 WRM = 300 +/- FPE, .38 S&W special = 150-170 FPE. .38 +P = 475 FPE.

Small game, targets, fine. Something with a heart beat that feels pain? USE ENOUGH GUN!!!!

I live in the hellhole known as California and as far as I'm concerned, it's just a matter of time before our state legislators start us down the path of airgun registration and regulation. Whether small bore or large bore, all it'll take will be one incident of mishandling or misuse and we'll be filling out as much paperwork for airguns as we now do for firearms. Don't think it won't happen - it will.

I advocate the "do what you want and shoot what you want theory", but the thing that I fear most is when a congress critter catches wind of all this stuff and puts out a bill on the floor to make air guns "firearms" nationwide, as they have in a number of states up to now.

That will be a negative effect on us all.

So I have to ask, what will be the straw that breaks the back? Will it be a big bore making fruit salad on YouTube, or something like someone popping a deer with a 177 and having it die a slow death on the lawn of that congress critter?

With all the crazy that seems to be accepted in our country in the last few years, our Second Amendment rights are forever being hammered with a mallet that knows no end.

Agree 100%. Shoot and enjoy what you want. But be conscious of the fact that many laws have been instituted by people with ill intent and could certainly happen with this issue. Hope it doesn't but the gun control side is tireless and motivated.
