Power plenum fo FX Crown

I'm planning to get prototypes made for some ideas that I have. If either work out, they won't look awkward and shouldn't add too much forward weight (which was my biggest concern).

Sound's great! FX recently told me that their comment on Facebook, saying they were developing a plenum, is false.

Too bad. But if someone else is able to produce one, here's a future customer. :)

There are only a couple of options to do this and only two are the least invasive because you replace parts with redesigned ones that screw in directly.

One of them is redesigning the valve housing in between the barrel and the bottle nipple and probably the valve. The other ones I’ll leave up to your imagination :p

Adding one of those plenum tubes means you have to put a drill / mill into your breech block to make it vent properly (which is already a problem with 1/8BSP threads) and it also makes it harder to use a pressure gauge afterwards in that same hole. And the biggest downside is that it looks really ugly...

I do wonder about the usefulness of this somewhat. Factory, the Crown is capable of 80 foot pounds. Add a new high pressure reg and hammer and we've seen it over 100. But to what end do you want more? What is your specific goal/function in mind? How much more do you expect to be able to get out of the platform? And is that enough to do what you wanted to do, that the gun wouldn't do before?

At some point I can't help but think that these little band-aid fixes for an extra little bit of power here and there, like a slightly larger plenum and a slightly bigger port and a slightly longer barrel, will have to give way to more bespoke high power platforms that are just designed to work in these "big bore" power ranges. This way you're not running at the very outer edges of the capability of your platform, not just in terms of pressure/volume, but also things like rigidity of the whole barrel assembly. We're seeing valving witchcraft like these balanced valves start making it into production guns (my understanding is the Hammer has some unusual valving too) to both improve efficiency and power output. Ultimately, I think that is where things are going.

I have had a few ideas 💡 about how to increase my FX Crown’s plenum volume, but am very pleased with the Huma HP regulator upgrade and hammer spring / weight modification. But, I would like to see what Earnest and the brains 🧠 at FX come up with as far as a FX Crown power plenum.

Well as I said, FX isn't developing a plenum for the Crown. So I guess we will never see what they might have tested so far either.

Me personally, I would like to use a plenum to reach the same speeds as I do today but with a lower reg pressure. More silent operation of the gun and saves air.
If needed, I could then raise the pressure and use heavier slugs. With my .22 Crown I get 860fps with 21 grain slugs at 130bar, 905fps with 150 bar (500mm barrel). It would be nice to reach 900fps with a lower reg pressure then 150.

One can dream... FX Crown MKII with larger plenum built in the factory block.

Would be nice if it followed the lines of the stock, but couldnt cover tank pressure gauge i guess.

Would probably work for Boss and Royale if someone was brave enough to drill and tap into the factory plenum. I only know of one man who has been brave enough to double gauge their Royale. Jimmy King!

Well, it sure tested my sanity..

Badass Jimmy!

In addition to the micro plenum to be mounted in place of the steel cap that closes the Crown's regulated air chamber, I have a "plenum" to be screwed in place of the gauge that measures the regulated air. It will be an 8 cm long cylinder with a capacity of about 22 cc. An Italian compressed air weapon tuning expert is building it. For now I don't add anything else. When I have it, I will do all the necessary tests and update you.
