This thing has been leaning against my shed for 6 months waiting to rot out. Seeing a different more cumbersome design I though about how I could make it for little to no money. Hence the pallet. They are available in most industrial parks and lumber yards for free to the public. The only money spent was for the screws. 2″ and 3″. Another expense will be the 12″ spikes or sand bags used to hold the base down. Here are some pictures and instructions to build your own in 2-3 hours.

    Broken down.

Centering and scribing for the mortise.

Mortising with a circular saw, hammer and chisel.

    Test fit.

    Adding feet.

Drilling for the spikes to hold it down.

More pics/instruction in the next post.

Moving on the next part is pieces used for the securing the post.

    Now the platform.

Same setup as the base for post holder.

    Ready to assemble.

Now for the assembled stand. The base is held together with three 2″ screws. The post is held on both ends by two screws each.
    .

    In the field.

    Broken down for travel.

All measurements were determined by the usable lumber after breaking down the pallet. I hope this helps anyone looking to make their own target stands for field target or any other shooting pursuit.

    Nice work John.
That should work well out in the open field at our Lebanon site.

Thanks guys. This build is a response to another shooter designing a heavier more cumbersome stand to be sold. My design is simple to make easy to move and best of all only costs a few hours, screws and four spikes as pallets can be had for free.

Hehe thanks Jimmy. I have a 7.5′ target stand I use for the CAG matches. It wanders the field from mach to match keeping shooters on their toes. At our final match of the year it was a 40yd offhand target sitting up high and a few feet from a hedge of 6′.
