poking fun about airgunning?

I put lots of money and time into airgunning. It's my favorite thing in the world. I own an fx vermanater mk2, and I'm a proud new owner of a daystate wolverene. I introduce other people, friends and family members to this fine sport of airgunning. But they don't see it the way I do. They think it's a waste of money and I've even got yelled at for paying so much for one. More often then not people give me a hard time about these guns. They say "what's wrong with you?! You could of bought a deer hunting rifle for that much!" Or "its just a pellet gun!!" People think im dumb or extremely weird. Just wondering if this happens to any of you other airgun enthusiasts. I thank Ted for making this site where I can talk alll I want about this amazing sport and don't feel like I'm gonna get made fun of for my passion.

I hear ya, kyler2643, some members at my club have mentioned they would prefer I didn't bring my airguns to the range, puts a dent in their ego's when beaten with a " slug gun ". I have to admit though it was only 5 yrs ago that my eyes were opened to the world of airguns and I like the look on people's faces after they have a couple of shots with one of my " slug/pellet guns ", they don't poke fun at you anymore.

I can see your friends argument, an air rifle is very different to a centrefire of AR15. However, you will never win an argument with people who have their egos inflated and entwined with the power of their weapons.

As a line of argument to peoples conversion/understanding, perhaps try pointing out that the air rifles can have much of the short to medium distance performance of .22LR yet not suffer from their availability problems. Pellets are cheaper. Airguns are usually quieter and better for close hunting and pest control; very much safer in the vicinity of people/buildings. Given that the US is heading toward another election, the “gun control” issue is sure to rise and there will likely be further panics on 22LR ammo but not likely with pellets (outside Wisconsin)..

Yep, here you can meet plenty of “dumb or extremely weird” fellow air gunners. We have a $2,000.00 air rifle to shoot the pedals off a flower one by one. Life is great and air gunning is too. What a perfect way to relax.

But don’t let everybody in on it or there will be a shortage of jsb 18.1 pellets.

Yes this happens to me quite a bit too. People will say why don't you just buy a .22lr it's so much cheaper or you could buy a deer rifle with that money. And the advantage to an airgun is that it's quite, obviously accurate and since smaller caliber ones aren't pumping out 100 ft lbs like a .22lr you can shoot in trees with them and not have to worry so much about it traveling 2 miles. And it's so much cheaper to shoot. And as for a deer rifle that's super expensive to shoot and your usually not going to go out and shoot a hundred rounds out of it each day. Those are just some of the advantages to an airgun plus I just like to shoot them and zero recoil is also awsome. :D

If they think airguns are crazy, try high end pocket knives. Tell people you paid more than $100 for a knife and they think you're nuts. Tell them you paid more than $500 and they look at you like you have absolutely lost your mind. Tell them you spent more than $1000 and their speechless. I've only owned a few knives over $1000 but, several in the $300-$600 range and a lot of people just don't understand it. I get a lot of, "you could buy a good pistol for that much", "you could buy every knife I've ever seen for that much" and all sorts of other comments from people who don't understand.

I'm relatively new to air guns but, have been quick to realize people have about the same level of ignorance (nothing offensive) about air rifles as they do about high end pocket knives. I've been able to justify my air rifles to a few people and they eventually get it (none of them have switched to air guns though) however, most everyone still thinks I'm a lunatic when it comes to knives when I try to justify why they cost so much.

I'm both Bp crazy and airguning crazier. So I see both sides of the story. I tell my Bp friends with there walmart special rifles come prove to me that you 800.00 gun is more accurate then my 1500.00 pellet gun. 95% of them can't hit a quarter at 100 yds with these guns. People don't realize the accuracy it takes to really shoot an apple at 200 yds with a 22hornet. NOT Easy. But I've done this with my air gun. So, poking fun is great LOL. IT WORKS BOTH WAYS. best guys, Steve.

I'm pretty lucky. First of all I'd dumb and extremely weird, so I get that from people all the time anyway. Secondly Kalamazoo MI is becoming an air gun Mecca. We have an active club with a dedicated airgun range. Sure powder burner guys scoff, but the biggest part of that is because the airgun range (due to all our hard work) is the nicest part of the club. We usually try to get people to shoot, and they are usually surprised at what airguns are capable of. Our club (SMGC Pneumatics) works hard at promoting the sport and helping noobs and others make the most out of their airguns, and or select the best airgun. Some picts for the club:

"They say “what’s wrong with you?! You could of bought a deer hunting rifle for that much!”"

That is almost exactly what my oldest son said to me after I bought a .25 Mrod.

"Dad you could have bought a .223 for what you paid for your air gun."

I told him. "Son, I already have a .223 and I shot the .25 Mrod more in one day than in 6 years that I have had my .223."

People who like to shoot will get the airgun thing as soon as they find out:

1) how accurate they can be. (they seem to get ruined to airguns when they start with a cheap springer)
2) how cheaply they can shoot and how often they can find trigger time,
3) how many more hunting/pesting opportunities they can have.

Mean while, I loaned my son a 2400 carbine on HPA. He calls or texts me once or twice a week with his kills. (Starlings, HOSP, Ringneck Dove, Ground Squirrel and Cotton Tails) He rarely has time to go out and shoot his AR. We both live in the country so we are able to shoot a lot. But there are houses close enough around shooting a .22 LR would not be wise.

This is the kind of question that I love seeing. Because it is the unifying question, not dividing question. I read every response with a smile on my face. We sometimes get so wrapped up in our own ideas that we failed to see the point of view of our own brethren. But, it's conversations like this that remind us that we are the minority and that we are lucky to be able to come together and talk about our passion. Because without the Internet, and without forums, most of us would be alone. I certainly know that I would be. :)

Very well put Ted, it's so hard to get anyone else who is interested in air rifles around were i live who just wants to sit down a have a simple conversation. just 2 days ago I took my Benjamin marauder to work to show the guy by the way I do construction so it's a very slanted crowed lol. I start to set up a target 75 yards away and you can see them taking bets if I would even hit the target. Needless to say they lost that bet. I then told them the cost of my next gun and I received a were can I get one
