Here's a quick introduction from Mike Edwards of ABC Targets:

As a kid, I had a Diana-Model 23 break-barrel rifle and loved it. I hadn’t shot an air rifle for over 40 years; then in 2018 I went to the local Field Target club to see what it was all about. I was impressed by how friendly the club members were and how willing they were to help.

I borrowed a club gun for a few matches and was hooked all over again. My first match, using an Air Arms S500, I scored “26” and the next match “21” - I realized I needed practice. I purchased a used gun and started shooting paper targets.

I liked the Field Target reset-style targets but didn’t have space to setup a range with strings running all over the yard, the spinner style targets worked but I was looking for something a little more exciting. After a search I discovered “bell targets” and was intrigued. These metal targets were designed for the indoor sport of bell target shooting and have a small hole for a bull’s eye, when a pellet passes through the hole it rings a bell behind the face plat. These targets are quite complicated…. I set out to build a better mouse trap.

With an engineering background and lots of trial and even more error, I designed the “Cube Gong” target. The “Cube Gong” is four targets in one with 4 different sized bull’s eyes or “kill zones” - when a pellet passes through the hole it hits a bell behind the face plate.

These targets are not designed for any one specific discipline and could be used as practice for Field Target, Bench Rest, 10 meter, hunting or just plinking.

I just went to ABC Target's website to check out their targets and liked what I saw. I ended up buying a cube gong to try out and a few of the hanging targets too. The products look good, are priced right and the shipping is very reasonable too. My shooting range on the property here will be a lot more dynamic for the boys and I after these targets and some other targets I ordered show up. I'll let you know how these look and perform when they get here and we try them out.

Mike, on the gong targets, I would consider offering them with a twist in the top shank of 90 degrees. This would allow for the use of a straight bolt that would allow the gong to spin all of the way around and not have to shoot directly into the tree. You could mount the gong on the side of the tree and allow the pellet to pass into a bank or other safe backstop, not damaging the tree so much and giving the target much more of a chance to react.

Because of your support of AGN, I did just place an order of a cube and some gong targets to try - though I will probably heat, twist, and repaint the gong targets before using them.

Thanks.

Hi Dan (bdzjlz)

You have some interesting questions.

I don’t completely understand your question about “90 degrees”, if you are looking to mount target on the side of a tree Gong targets are supplied with mounting hardware to mount on front or side of a tree, post or board. I’ll try posting some photos. Resonance is a funny thing, the mounting screw not only mounts the target but also stops the “face plate” (white part) from resonating when hit. When mounted correctly a hit on the face plate will sound like a dull thud. The “bell” (black part) hangs free inside the cube and a perfect hit on the bell will ring like a bell - tinggggg!

You asked about a side mount so you didn’t damage the tree, target face plate is 4”x 4” or 16 square inches so you shouldn’t miss.

I received your order, thanks

Mike

Mike,

Below is an one of several targets I built earlier this year, giving a few away to my air gun friends and keeping some for myself. They work absolutely fabulous as you get a 360 degree rotation with any pcp out to 50 yards and beyond plus they react really well to the lesser energy of springers.

Note the twist in the blade shank to allow them to completely spin around the shaft lag bolt. A section of conduit and a couple of flat washers round out the installation. I would rather be able to buy the blade assemblies than make them on my own.

Thanks.

Mike - thanks for the great service as the new cube target and gong blades arrived today, only a short time since ordering on line.

With regards to my suggestion that you should offer some with a 90 degree twist and your reply that you didn't understand what I was trying to achieve, below is a photo of one of your blades that I heated and twisted this evening. I tested it out using my .22 Weihrauch HW97K tuned to about 15 lbs. It worked perfectly as when hit it spins 360 degrees, reacting very nicely. I am going to set several of these out along the creek in the back of my house. I will use a nicer detailed screw and spacer. I just rigged this one up in a hurry and as a demo in my indoor range to show you what I was after. The blades work great and are just the right size and weight!

Thanks.

DZ

Mike - I'm sorry for pestering you. I took the remaining blades this morning, and S hooks, tightening one end of the S hook around the blade, and closing the other end around a 5" wood screw using the same principle as shown above, and they worked perfect for spinners "As Is." I will undoubtedly be purchasing more of them in the future.

Great products and terrific service.

Many thanks.
