play in the eyepiece of scopes?

Years ago I discovered there was side to side and up and down play in the eyepiece of a scope I has just bought.

I took it back to the store and talked to the clerk about it. I looked at a few other scopes and found that they all seemed to be that way.

Now these were fairly cheap department store scopes.

Well, I just bought a new scope and after removing my old one I discovered that it has that play as well.

it's a Bushnell Banner, 6-18x50. It's always served me well , so I guess it never really moved.

Has anyone else noticed this?

My new UTG doesn't seem to have that same play in it.

Good concept. And it does happen. Sit at a bench with any scope where the eyepiece can move at all and press lightly on the eyepiece. The aim point will move. Some say that the system is spring loaded and should not be able to shift enough to cause point of impact change (that it should always return to center) but I don't trust that. Having the eyepiece more stable seems like a very good thing. This is one reason I use lots of Hawke Sidewinder 30 scopes. Locking ocular ring. Keeps this from being a problem in the first place but the o-ring idea is great. Thanks for posting that video.

Hello,

l am new to the forum so I hope this might help but there is a great video on Youtube on Paralax and setting up your scope if it has adjustment for it. The guy is great and it is only 4 minutes long and he explains it so well that you will be amazed. For instance the yardage setting are usually garbage for instance when my rifle is sighted it for a hundred yards the Paralax adjuster has to be set to 52 yards. Well worth watching, link below.
