Pigeons Pigeons Pigeons Oh My!

I have about four permissions that I do pesting for birds and groundhogs. Lately the pickings have been mighty slim. A couple of months ago one of my farmers suggested I go up to this dairy farm to take care of their pest birds. Well with things slowing down and feeling I have done a good job at my other permissions I took a drive. This place is a dairy farm on the east coast and has about 250 cows which is a sizable dairy for this area. as I drove up the drive I saw the silos covered with a couple hundred pigeons far and away the most I have every seen. I went searching for the farmer and found him and some other helpers and another farmer talking and working on some equipment. I introduced my self and showed them some video of my actual pesting including some NV shooting. They were blown away and enjoying the video. The farmer pointed up at a pigeon in his shop ceiling and said he was tired of getting pooped on while working on his equipment. I said wait a minute and got my Leshiy shooting JSB 15's at about 13.5 fpe. I made sure I had some wood behind the pigeon and dropped him. One of the other farmers said man my place is just up the road you are welcome anytime to shoot. I did have a pass through on that shot so I will switch over to the H&N Baracuda Hunter hollow point and see how they do.

I finally went over and set-up under some shade trees to work over the silos from about 65 to 75 yards with my Impact shooting JSB 18's at 910 fps. It was like shooting fish in a barrel with just about each shot getting a pigeons and watching them fly off but coming back after not too long. I had some help from the farmers little boy and girl I will say they were around 5 and 6 years old. They wanted to go retrieve each pigeon after I shot it and had to be careful around them. The parents new what was going on and did not seemed worried but it did complicate things. The kids ended up showing me their pet chickens and wheeling the one around in a wheel barrow which was comical.

There also was a lot of pigeons inside the various cow barns and I had my FX Verminator on hand shooting the B. Hunters at 12.3 fpe on pw two. I had only a few pass throughs with it and I think this may be to pellet to shoot inside on my low power rigs. I had a couple of days ago did some pellet penetration testing in clay on pw 3 and 2 on my Verminator to see the best pellet. The chart I will attach is pretty messy but it gave me some information to go on. I have not done a lot of inside low power shooting so I will have to see how various pellets perform. For the day I would imagine I shot about 40 pigeons. Bill

Been a busy few days. I went back to the farm with all the pigeons and I estimate I got about forty more. Most were off the silos but about a dozen were from within the buildings using my Leshiy. Like I said I was using my Impact in .22 caliber shooting the JSB 18's shooting. A lot of the pigeons will fly off when hit but I could hear some of them hitting the surrounding roofs so they did not get far. In away this is a good situation because if they fly off into a field I don't need to pick them up. I did find some cow barns in another section of the farm plus the silos I have been shooting over should be safe for shooting slugs. The silos are only 60 to 70 yards away so slugs are not needed but the other cow barns offer the chance to shoot at longer range. I also today got permission to shoot groundhogs on a horse farm. The pastures are about 200 yards wide so about 100 yards to the center. Another reason to put the slug liner back in for the groundhogs too. Oh almost forgot at the dairy farm there are hundreds of starlings coming in to roost in the cow barns in the evening. I told the dairy farmer it's time to come in with my night vision and put a hurting on them. I got to say I am having so much fun pesting and most of these permissions are only 15 to 20 minutes away from home Bill
