Pick up your airgun and shoot? Or enjoy endless tuning options?

Some have good fun shooting a can at 55 yards, i really want to shoot a dice at +100 yards, and a golf ball at 200 yards.

I write yards i really mean meters as i am a EURO boy.

I dont think i will be a constant tuner, i think i am able to accept that at some point, this is as good as it is ever going to be. Also knowing myself if i stagnate in my performance then things tend to get boring fast, this have been the case in 3 cushion billiards - rifle shooting - darts - playing the drums - weight lifting - fly fishing. Even cost me a few jobs too along the way, as all tolerances was not within 8/1000 of a mm, and a few 100 of a mm get boring even on the all manual grinding machine i operated, even more so and faster with a CNC machine.

And i tried several times to get a job in aerospace / aviation with a well known company here, but they never hired me,,,,,, which was their loss not mine. but thats the standards i think i would enjoy working within.

And if i win a little money in the lottery, 14 years ago as i have been stunt driving my 660 CCM Yamaha raptor quad bike and got to be okay doing that, well then i will get a regular motorcycle modified for stunt and throw down on that, even if my next birthday is my 55 one,and my bones i am sure are not what they use to be.

All guns present endless tuning options if you have the skill. But once I decide what projectile I’m committed to, my end game is a gun that will spend the rest of its life as a pick up and shoot gun. When the itch for another caliber or projectile arises, I buy another gun for the collection and try not to mess with my guns that are dialed in.

I started shooting airguns last year with a Prod. It shot well out of the box with Crosman domed and a little better with H&N FTT copper plated. It shoots some heavier pellets well too but not at high enough velocity to flatten out the trajectory. I enjoyed finding out which it shot best. I had a scope problem and when that was fixed I started hitting squirrels but I had a couple run off after a solid hit. So I tuned it for more power. Now they don't run. It was fun. But inn the process I thought I needed to drill out the transfer port when I had not really turned in the hammer spring all the way. So now I need to go back to a stock size transfer port and see what I can get with maximum hammer force on the valve. I also ordered a anti-bounce kit for it yesterday. I did not mess with it during squirrel season but now that is over, I want to see if I can improve it further. I also changed from the original butt stock to one of my own design.

I didn't mod it because it did not shoot well. i tuned and modified it to make ti more to my liking.

I bought an Avenger this year and it almost requires tuning. It comes with the regulator set at 2900 - too high in my opinion - and hammer spring in three turns - also too much I believe. I degassed it before shooting it and set the regulator initially at 1600 psi. It shot pretty well there but energy was 35-40 fpe so I decided to increase the regulator pressure. I tried increasing hammer force each step but it did not increase velocity until I got to about 2400 psi. I'm up to 45-50 fps and velocity went up only a little once I got to 2100 psi. I am at a hammer spring increase of 1.5 turns and it is shooting great! 1/4 inch groups at 33 yards are now normal. I am not anxious to change the tune.

I haven't gotten a slug to shoot even passably but I don't currently care.

I improved the trigger pull by increasing the length of the screw that adjusts sear engagement from 10 mm to 12mm. There is still a tiny bit of creep bot I cannot make it slam fire so I think the trigger is now finished. There was too much creep for me before I replaced the screw. (it is a 5mm-.8)

Right now I am getting my compressor bottle working and messing with moderators. After that there will be something else to change. I like shooting but I also like messing with my guns (powder and air).

JimD - which caliber on the Avenger? I am getting the .25.
