Phone recommendation

I was given the green light to upgrade my Kyocera Brigadier phone. I liked this phone so much that when it was time for an upgrade four years ago, I got a chuckle from the sales guy for upgrading to the same phone. The reason I stuck with this phone is because I'm hard on my phones. I'm always working on something and have broken several phones. This phone is shockproof and waterproof without needing a case.

For my next phone, I want to get a phone that will take amazing pictures and will record great in slow motion. I think the prices for scope adapters have come down enough for me to upgrade my phone. I still think they will continue to fall even more as soon as China starts making more of them which will force everyone else to lower their prices. My only need for the next phone is it needs to be an Android phone because I have apps I bought on Google and from what I understand, iPhones won't take them.

I was looking at the Samsung Galaxy s9 but it's way out my price range. 800 for a phone is nuts. I don't know what is good for a price but if a phone can do slow motion scope camming for less then $300, I'll take it. Or is $300 not enough? Also, if I can get a lower price for the phone if I extend my contract with Verizon, I ok with that because I've been with Verizon for 15 years and I don't think I will not go with in the future. What do you guys use?

I've used all sorts of phones over the years
[Since I used to jailbreak / root / unlock for people] so Apple / Android / Windows - I've had em' all..

When getting a 'personal phone', I am always the type that goes for a high end camera - that can also make phone calls..
I do use Android exclusively now.. The last few phones I had were the Note-5, then the S7-Edge, and now the Note-8
They're all fantastic, however, with the Note-8, I can't stand how big of a p.i.t.a. it is getting to work with scope-cam-mounts
since it has a dual lens setup.. For filming through cams, I really do recommend anything with a single-lens.

The Note-5 and the S7/Edge would probably be nice - because they're also smaller..
I just don't remember if either one of them shot with FPS high enough to do native 'slow-motion'.
I don't even know if my Note-8 will - without a lot of image quality degradation..
The quality of photos and videos they produce through - Very impressive. As is the image stabilization - Which helps a lot also.
Low light conditions, they shoot very well..

I compared them to the last iPhone I had - The 4S, and all 3 blew that thing out of the water.

I JUST found my Galaxy S5 the other day, so, I'll be testing that one out w/ the Side-Shot pretty soon..
I'm curious how well that phone will mount as well as the photo / video quality - through scope compared to the S8..

[EDIT / UPDATE]

Well, the Galaxy S5 was a no-go. While it takes amazing photos, the photo/video controls are extremely limited..
By 'limited' I just mean *Auto Only* I completely forgot about that. Just like with cameras, I only shoot in Manual Mode.
That said, it's right back to using my Note-8.

PS: There are a LOT of Chinese phones out there that will rival any of the 'big name brand' phones we're used to seeing today..
Some can be found on sites like GearBest / BangGood / etc. for pretty reasonable prices. Lots of reviews for them on YouTube..

Yo, the S7 Edge has a better camera than the S6 or S8 ...I have had them all and the S7 doesn’t need to be focused with a touch to the screen all the time. I get them in excellent condition (new other) on eBay.. and you get a brand new phone, literally, if you get good or excellent condition new other...for $150-$200. Just get one that is Unlocked and you can use it on any carrier, you can actually pick your carrier...easy to figure out. If you want to do that I’ll figure out the exact model you need for your carrier. -Nate

P.S. The S8 camera is super bad compared to the S7. I thought it would be way better and I couldn’t even use it to film videos, major jello and I had to stop the show to focus about every 10 seconds.

Nate,

I had two S7 Edge phones, and worked on a few more - including the regular S7 design..
Now my personal phone is the Note-8, and the camera on it is pronominal..
I wouldn't expect there to be much difference between the S8 and Note-8 cams..
Mine has dual aperture f/1.7 [wide] and f/2.4 [telephoto] so I just had to check into the S8..
Apparently, it only uses the f/1.7 [I thought that phone had 2 lenses also]
That's the exact same cam [lens & sensor] as the S7
The only difference would be the software upgrade/update from the S7 to S8

Interesting..

I am using the iPhone XS Max to record with the side shot. It can do 240fps. Only thing is the slow mo picks up every bit of recoil from the gun. Makes the camera jitter.

I am just starting to look into this. My wife just upgraded to the iPhone Xs. I saw it had 1080P @ 120 & 240 fps, and thought it could rival the BackBone H7 Pro GoPro in the high-end Side-Shot. I have a phone version of the Side-Shot, and wondered if it took the iPhone XS very well. Apparently it does. I am interested in the field of view... are you set up to use the wide lens or the telephoto? Can you setup for both, or are you limited to the wide due to focal length? On the camera shake from recoil at 240 fps, are you using the image stabilization?

I gotta figure out how to make my wife forget about that new phone for a little while so she doesn't notice it missing while I mount it up!

I don't want an iPhone

Alot of people hate on the iphone when in reality its one of the most user friendly systems, bulletproof, and very easy to repair yourself. Did I mention they are capable of great picture/video taking?! My Iphone XS max takes full 1080p at 240fps, digiscoping is incredible with it.

I can repair a shattered screen for $25 on an iphone 8 in about 30 minutes and you can also buy prebuilt assemblies it you aren’t as tech savvy with the screen/camera/microphone/speaker for $50 and can swap those in literally less than 10 minutes.

Once you go above the iphone 8 they get more costly but still very cheap compared to other phones.

The takeaway is I wouldn’t scott at an iphone, they are a very viable option for what we do.

This picture here is a screen shot I took from my slow motion video with my iphone xs max in my digiscoping set up. Bird was about 70 yards away and was backed all the way off on my zoom, it’s crazy the video and pictures I can get with this set up.

I, too, have an S7 (and a sideshot for it). Great camera & the slomo feature is the reason I got it. IMHO it's built like a tank & great quality of photos. Bought it new/unlocked on Ebay even though the S9 was already out because I read a review about its ease of operation and because it was only $160. The only problem for me is that when filming in slomo one can't adjust exposure & in sunny conditions videos tend to be overexposed. Guess that can be adjusted in editing. Having said all that, I've had both (camera & sideshot) for 2 years and NEVER filmed a hunt yet! Maybe next time I go out I'll put it through some real field research & see how practical, easy to use & functional it is. The phone itself has been great.
