Phenomenal air pistol accuracy!

My Tau MK 08 'ten-meter' pistol has been a helluva LOT of trouble! But being side-lever loading allows mounting a scope to my preferred low center of gravity, so I decided to make a hunting and field-target pistol of it despite the fact it was very inaccurate with the original barrel.

So after souping 'er up, I sent Ole Blue to that airgun magician Allen Zasadny along with a Daystate rifle barrel to be chopped and fitted, and also have him fabricate a custom scope base. Of course he did his usual incredible work; but not long after return, the valve-stem failed (broke).

I found Steve at Pomona Airguns the ONLY person with parts and knowledge to repair a Tau MK 08. Unfortunately the replacement (factory) valve-stem also broke a couple years later... but not until I'd fallen utterly in love with the gorgeous thing and it's awesome abilities.

Thankfully Steve said he could fabricate a "new, better, stronger" valve-stem, that he assured would hold up much better than the originals. Of course Steve suffered some personal issues after he received it, so Ole Blue was away a full year. She came home a couple weeks ago, and our reunion couldn't be sweeter.

Here is my latest bench-rest effort at 35 yards; the maximum field-target range, and probable-maximum small-game reach. The five-shot group with 8.4 grain JSB Exacts at 680 FPS measures just .175" center-to-center; less than the diameter of the pellets that shot it! Four of the five shots stacked right on top of one-another, and would have been virtually immeasurable. The group is about 1" below the white aiming-spot, and would easily hide under the dime laying to the right.

Ole Blue sure been a whole lotta trouble... but she worth it!

Don't be fooled by that best-of-the-best effort, Mr Vines.

There's a reason I seldom present a single group (though it be five shots); so I feel compelled to repeat a common disclaimer when doing so, "Though an impressive single group makes for a pretty picture, it says little about a guns (or shooter's) true capabilities."

That said, Ole Blue's best average of .40" c-t-c for five consecutive five-shot groups still paints a pretty rosy picture (considering the average group would still hide under a dime). And be aware these best-case results are not really indicative of my own capabilities; rather, the gun's

I can't hit the broad side of a barn... while standing inside!

FWIW, after taking guitar lessons for over a YEAR and (finally) realizing about the only thing I could play (badly) was Yellow Rose Of Texas, it occurred to me I have no guitar talent WHATSOEVER! It was a pretty harsh lesson for a ten-year-old kid, but one well learned. To paraphrase, think I'd rather have musical talent.

As i recall, you actually earn money with your guitar SV. What can I say... I know, BOY HOWDY!!! Oh, and also...

Respect,

R

One thing I've learned about loaning out books, Mark... after a few never came home, is it helps to remember who you loan 'em to!

BTW, assuming these are good enough friends to loan stuff to, I have an excellent suggestion for excellent (and inexpensive) Christmas or birthday gifts! (Shameless marketing hint)

....i have Never been able to perfectly send pellets thru the same hole repeatedly and consecutively for 5 shots - i may be shooting at ten meters if it shot like that......but at 35 yards ? even my high blood pressure bumping the crosshairs would have to healed.... and the size of the hole ?? is that even possible - like the pellet went so fast thru the air that the skirt closed up by .002" o.d. ?? i tried to find if your czech pistol has is regulated....is it ? how many shots per fill is it getting at that 680 fps velocity, and do you fill yours to 300 bar ? -paul.

You misunderstood the group size Rane. All my group-size quotes are in the truest measure of accuracy, center-to-center measurements; as stated in my original post.

Ole Blue's performance improved even a bit more after getting the new valve. Here's the latest testing-

8.44 grain Exact, 3300 PSI fill, 48 shot power-band with new valve- Low= 670, Hi= 687, ES=17, SD= 1.7, Average= 678 FPS/8.6 foot-pounds.

The group is pictured in my OP Paul, with a dime sitting next to the group. For better perspective, on paper it would easily be a 'one-hole' group with an outside-diameter of a 9mm bullet, that could be completely covered by a thumb-tack.

Thanks for the nice compliment Jim. Pistol shooting is definitely a whole 'nother challenge than riflery. I love it!

I’m referring to handguns only...I’ve enjoyed shooting my 9mm Glocks for over 10 years, that’s when I made the change to Glock although I still enjoy my Rugers and S&W so handguns are nothing new but switching over to airguns back in early 2017 has been a whole eye opening adventure and now I’m finding myself wanting a bit more challenge and air pistols are starting to take up my reading time, I understand that the Diana Bandit is nothing great but I’m finding it to be a nice pistol for the price and shooting in the low 700’s seems to be the norm for some air pistols and eventually I would like to up the quality like a HW44 or a AP16 just to mention a couple, I know there are other pistols out there but I needed to start someplace.

I think I’ve found another addiction 😆.
