Pennsylvania might open up hunting to airguns

Pennsylvania House votes to give hunters new gun options

"HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The state House of Representatives has voted to remove a ban on hunting with semi-automatic rifles.House Bill 263, sent to Gov. Tom Wolf’s desk for his signature on Thursday, also removes the ban on air- and gas-powered rifles. The legislation doesn’t automatically allow the guns to be used for hunting, but it gives the Pennsylvania Game Commission the authority to regulate and allow their use during certain seasons or for certain animals.Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) said his bill brings Pennsylvania in line with many other states that allow semi-automatic firearms as a hunting option.Gabler said air- and gas-powered rifles – now with equal or greater muzzle energy and stopping power than numerous small-caliber guns that are allowed – are especially popular with young hunters and women in states that allow them.He said the intent of his legislation is to bring new options to Pennsylvania hunters."

So basically, it removes a legislative ban and allows the PA Game Commission to decide what is appropriate for hunting. That's probably better than having a bunch of suits in Harrisburg make those decisions. I live in Washington state now, and it it still illegal to hunt with airguns except for a few 'unclassified' animals.

That would be great. We had an old plantation house in Harmony Township for years. Sat on 114 acres bordering the Allegheny national game preserve, They all migrated onto our property to hunt & eat. Huge heards of deer, big turkeys & fox. pheasant, etc. Toms got pretty big too, so I hope they make it l;egal for you too! But fur-baring prey also requires an additional permit here in OH. I wanna shoot turkey with air gun that, maybe(?) has a minimum of a certain muzzle velocity? Or a .357 Carnivore for deer?

That's interesting, ztirffritz. I grew up in PA and now reside in CA where airgun hunting is legal (small game only). PA is a hunters' paradise & I really miss it. It's slim pickins down here on the border; 99% bunnies. I got bunnies comin' outta my ears! Bunny burgers, fricasseed bunnies, braised bunnies, BBQ bunnies, bunny soup, bunny salad, baked bunny, bunny stew, bunny casserole, bunny sandwiches, boiled bunny, broiled bunny, sautéed bunny, bunny kabobs, bunny creole, pan fried bunny, deep fried bunny, bunny gumbo, stir fried bunny, pineapple bunny, lemon bunny, coconut bunny, pepper bunny, bunny in potatoes; that's - that's about it.

When I first took my wife to visit my family in PA her reactions were

1) How the heck do you deal with this humidity?!?!?
2) Why are there so many dead animals on the roads?

I don't know if this statistic is still true or not, but I believe PA has more deer/auto collisions than any other state....by a large margin. I think WV was #2 and PA was twice the number of WV.

I live in upstate New York we have good laws for airgun hunting but I wish it was all small game more importantly turkey. When I lived in Miami you would hunt collared Dove ( eurasian collared Dove ) an invasive species that could be hunted with airguns but it also had a limit of six. Anyone know if any new airgun bills have every been proposed in New York State?
