Pellets might Ricochet

I have a serious question
I own knock down metal targets (Gamo Squirrel) and the Metal Remington Crow reset target...
I would also like to shoot spinners as well.......... I never used these types because of living in town.....

Question
If I put a good thick backstop behind them.... is that enough...
Or should I have thick sides and top added in case of ricochet ..........

I have always shot paper and not sure what pellet will do once these type of targets are hit....

I am thinking of thick 2x8's I have laying around ......

Normally the pellet will pancake when hitting steel and just fall or bounce with very little energy. It depends on the pellet and the kind of target but you shouldn't have any trouble with dangerous ricochets unless you shoot BBs. However it can never hurt to be more safe when shooting right.

I get ricochets off of steel targets all the time. that's why I don't shoot steel closer than fifty yards. You could make a 3/4 inch plywood box and put your spinners inside it. Plenty strong enough for the sides and top but you will want some additional 2x lumber in the back for the rare occasions that you miss. ;-)

I have tons of 2 by 8's around that I can make a sizable box .... just did not want to..
The wife is upset enough now with all the bullet stops in the yard... ;-)
I will make a box this weekend out of 2 x 8s and see how it works....

Yes I will be shooting .25 marauder at them say 35 to 50 yards.......and with all calibers of other guns...

With issues in neighborhood right now.... I do not need even one ricochet ...

Those targets you mention probably won't last long with the .25, they are best with .177 and lower power .22. Try Steel Plinkers targets, they are made for high power air rifles: http://www.steelplinkers.com/index.html

It stands up well to the .25 Marauder shots, but it does frequently ricochet.

Here are some pictures I took of the swinger/ricochet test. I set my swinging targets inside a large cardboard box. I wanted to video this but the sage was blocking the view.

In these you can see fragmentation to the sides of the targets. I did not see any impacts behind the targets. I only had one ricochet. It was off the small target in the middle when I hit it's edge.

I moved in to 35 yards and shot 8 more from my bipod.

Here we can see more fragmentation just like from 50yards. The exception is that these pieces appeared larger and imbedded deeper in the box.

I bought two 24 x 24 ballistic rubber pads from precision airguns and supplies
I glued them to a 10 gauge piece of steel and they are setting at 30 and 40 yards
without doubt they are worth the money
I need to pick up a 12 x 12 piece for indoor shooting over the winter.... or maybe a 12 x 24
FYI ...one issue I have to bring up... when we shoot 10 meter pistols at that range with wadcutters we sometimes get bounce back.
12 fpe is not an issue but 6 fpe flat nose... wear safety glasses.

Should you happen to find one of these at Goodwill, be aware that pellets will ricochet off his head and arms, barely leaving a mark. But his torso makes a good target. The pellets will disintegrate inside his body and not pass through until his chest is completely destroyed.

Ok problem solves
I made a large box out of 2x6 and 2x4 lumber... nothing else.
I made it 46 inches high (give or take) , all was junk lumber I had laying around...
34 by (maybe 40) inches wide and deep..... (did not use tape measure)
I even had a floor.. . it has a shelf in it ... so I can put two target in it at once...

I modified the Remington crow to allow it to stand in the bottom half of the box..
Then I put the crow deep inside ....... Not much lead came out the front at all when shot at... inside looks
like shrapnel laying around and believe it or not.... there is shrapnel embedded into the inside of the 2x6's

I am very glad I made it, catches all lead.... maybe a few pieces of lead on ground in front of box... not bad.
The shrapnel is very fine and almost dust like... (surprised me)

I placed it 40 yards out.. (heavy sucker I must say) and placed many many shots to the crow...
Works good... the bad thing is the crow target cant take it... it bend the reset paddle and is bending the area around the center hit paddle.. Works but I do not recommend the Remington pellet gun targets... look tuff but not...

Next I will order spinners .....

these are the steel targets I use with the cricket . They are made of stainless steel. The pellets just flatten out after hitting them. But I shoot in open spaces. So take all safety precautions since you have neighbors around.
