Pellet Spiraling and Barrel Twist Rates..

Cp moves with velocity.

As you approach Mach-1, the CP moves backwards.

Above Mach-1 it moves forward.

Stability is a function of the distance from Cp to Cg.

Not surprising that stability is different near Mach-1.

Spin helps control dispersion by causing any imbalance or surface irregularities to average out more than anything else - gyroscope effects are not that high as the spin rate is low.

Some velocities are just not stable.

I think Derrick is almost correct, but I believe the conflict of the two stabilization forces he identified only occurs when the spin speed is incorrect for the sectional density of the pellet. If the observer throws an American football and the spin rate is correct, the football will pitch over when the football reaches its apogee, keeping the orgive perfectly centered in its flight path. If however, the football is over rotated, the football will not pitch over. In which case the air pressure below the football would be greater than over the top side and the football will attempt to fly and sort of float towards its destination. The same thing occurs with bullets causing vertical deviation over longer distances as the bullet encounters lower and higher air temperatures/air density along its flight path. With a pellet though, over rotation will cause the conflict of the two stabilization forces Derrick so eloquently identified and spiraling occurs.

hello guys, as previously mentioned my barrel is 17.7 twist .22 cal with 12 grooves 24 inch barrel... after reading all the theories gyroscopic precession, drag stabilized, 90degree angle push of pellet during its flyt bcoz of spin, about internal ,external ballistics of a pellet (jsb 18.3 diabolo shape), i became more confused with the results of my testings.. at 750 up-to 930 fps all my pellets are spiraling at 100 yards.. at those speeds, some have wide spirals, and some have micro spirals.. its been 2 mos now i had this problem and i cannot solve the spiraling issues, but yesterday was rely unbelievable, i tried to push the speeds up-to 1000 fps.. i was amazed spiraling was so little then lowered it down to 990 980 970 and the sweetest spot for me was 960 , totally had zero spiraling and i could group a 2-2 1/2 ctc at 100 yards and the number of turret clicks matched my ballistic calculator 30 clicks.. spot on.. me myself couldn't believe it, .. wait till i post my videos here coz my current videos are so shakey , im waiting for my scope cam to arrive so i can share a clear footage as my proof.. 17.7 is not a slow twist and yet i can shoot it at 960 fps .. i was expecting lowering the fps would be the solution but not... dont.. believe my statements guys if you havent seen the videos yet.. soon ill post it here.. im wondering if this theory of mine makes sense... maybe with 18.13 diabolo shape pellets the trick is "dont spin the pellet more than its velocity" (atleast not too close) for example --lets say you have a 17.7 inch twist barrel, thats equivalent to 1.475 ft , since my first speeds was 890fps, the pellets are moving at 890 fps divided by 1.475ft equals "603 revolutions per second" thats how fast the pellet is traveling ,, so from zero distance the pellet speed is at 890 fps but the farther it goes , the velocity decreases..and by using chairgun calculator, at 85 yards my velocity already dropped at 640fps, at 90 yards 620fps (that's where the spiraling starts to appears) and at 100 yards 600 fps (spiraling gets worse).. pellet is revolving at 603revs/sec (spinrate degrades less than pellet velocity). with retained speeds of 600 fps at 100 yards , we are spinning it faster than it travels... i will try to stretch at 150 yards with my current set up (960fps) to see if spiraling is present further downrange... so as long as the velocity is higher than the spin rate, you will have a good projectile.... now try solving slow twist barrels, 1:19.6 twist (stx barrel) that's why maybe these barrel can shoot further without spirals... all my testing were done with almost zero wind around.. im sorry for my poor grammar guys..wait for my scope cam footage soon
