pellet speed

Everyone has a different opinion so I will just give mine and hopefully others will give theirs. I do not like to shoot slower than ~900 fps because the pellets slow down so quickly. The problem with 802 fps is the drop at 75-100 is a lot. If you are shooting one range it would not really matter because if both pellets are accurate then you set your scope up for that range.

However, when you are shooting sometimes close, sometimes far, the slower the pellet the more you have to compensate. The faster the pellet the less to compensate and the less errors made. So for me, I would shoot the faster pellet which has plenty of power to take down squirrels, raccoon other similar targets at those ranges.

Keep in mind that BC is not a constant and most pellets have the highest BC's below 900fps. While it is often overlooked, pellets shooting at higher speeds with lower BC's can actually have more drop and more wind deflection than a pellet shooting alittle slower with a higher BC. Bullets in airguns tend to work better as speed increases. But that is because BC is also increasing with many bullets as speed climbs. Pellets don't work the same. Some pellet/twist rate combos work well above 900fps and many don't. Just some food for thought.

I do tend to push pellets as fast as possible till accuracy starts to fall off, but in many cases, though the gun remains very accurate, BC is falling and wind deflection and drop are actually greater!! Finding the balance of accuracy at a good BC for the flattest shooting combo is the key with pellets. Hope not to seem negative, just trying to point out a very common misconception regarding airgun pellets and speed.

hvackJust trying to figure out if my bobcat would be better off with a 925 fps 26g king or a 835 fps 34g heavy king , with similar accuracy ?? Looking for advice .

How far do you typically shoot and what type of shooting do you do?

Both pellets tend to do really well at those speeds, so in my mind it comes down to what you use your gun for.

Just came in from shooting the 25 Wildcat. Conditions were really bad. About 15 to 18 mph gusting wind 90 deg from the left. Wind flag ribbons were standing straight out. Shooting the 25gr and 33 heavies at 50 and 75 yards. At 50 yards, holding a mil into the wind was getting about a 3 inch spread. With the 33gr was getting about 1 1/2 spread. Moved out to 75 yards. Had to hold 2 mil into the wind. With the heavies was getting about a 3 inch spread and with the 25gr the spread moved out to 6 inches and the gusts would really knock them down 2 to 3 inches. Without any wind this gun will stack pellets. My wind flags finally blew over so I quit. Heavies are the way to go in bad conditions.

Update !!!!! I have bought several tins of 34 gr mk2 kings !! shot them through my bobcat .25 !! Adjusted and tuned the gun just for the heavy 34's ... The pellet is by looking,, more uniform , and cleaner , more accurate ,,, at the right conditions ,,,,, ..... I managed to get 857 fps average , 55.6 fpe,,,, just adjusting the hammer spring falling off the reg at 140 bar ....all the way, (on the hammer spring),, in then out 1 full turn = up to 865 on heavy's ...... went from 100 shots on 26 gr kings at 865 to 70 shots on heavy's at avg 855 . I think good trade offs ???? from 43 fpe to 55 fpe ... what do you think ??????????
