Pellet expansion not what I had hoped for

"intenseaty22"Hey Jonny, I don’t know the math, but look at it this way as well. British hunters are killing bunnies at 60 yards plus, often times with .177s mostly using sub 12FPE guns. That’s 12FPE at the muzzle, not 60 yards away. These bunnies and squirrels just flop right over, no questions asked. Shot placement will still be more important. There are some folk that have done the math and calculated out energy loss from muzzle to impact zone at some 30 or 50 yards. Hope this helps a bit.
That's the ticket. I have a fellow air gunner in my area that tunes Weihrauch springers, and he taking squirrels with headshots at 40 yards with a detuned HW30 which is just under 7 fpe at the muzzle. I think his ballistic calculator gives him something like just over 3 fpe at the target, and he is dropping them with standard Crosman Pointed Hunters which have great penetration and zero expansion. I have to say that the Brits have pretty much settled the accuracy over power debate long ago.

Take at look at MrDaveRatz on YouTube and you'll see this guy drop all kinds of small game at moderate distances with sub-12 fpe rifles. Also Andy's Range, Squirrel Hunter Channel, and The Air Gun Show show hunting rabbits, squirrels, corvids, doves, etc. with low power, highly accurate rigs that don't use expanding ammo.

Nothing at all against expanding ammo, and Brian, man you are taking no prisoners with your setup! Holy cow. You sure don't have to worry about the head during field dressing for that. Are you mostly taking fox squirrels in your area? Looks like great fun.

No matter what you decide Johnny, you will get the job done with good effect.

ATB,
Michael

@BeachGunner, it’s a lot of fun, no doubt. Therapeutic as well! Not killing..just being in the woods hunting. I shoot more red squirrels than anything - they’re considered a pest here (no limit / no closed season). When I’m serious, it’s mostly Fox and grey, in regular and black phase. They all taste the same on nachos 😉

And no, I’m not messing around with the set-up I use. Half the energy of .22 rimfire (but 10x as gratifying)

Yeah never underestimate a good flat or match pellet back when I first got my 1322 I only had crosman super pellets (not to be confused with super match) that's all I used because that's what was available. You know the ones they have a dish when you look at em.
Walked into the bush spotted a rabbit running did a quick shot (instinctual) hit em in the back leg blew the joint apart i pump back up walked over to where he was and finished him off with a shot to the head in what seemed like seconds in my mind. We also used to load them backwards but they never worked that way.
That's why predator polymag pellets are so popular the combine both aerodynamics with a hollow point that little dish out part were the cone sits.

A poor picture example of super pellets the edges were more sharper as I remember.but you see the dish.

I should clarify, I’m not questioning the power vs placement debate - I have over 60 kills with my 5fpe springer.

BUT... I mean... if I can deliver 50fpe to the same spot as 5fpe, that’s simply better. I can hit the right spots, I just want to impart maximum POWWUUUH, because I dont like double taps, and most certainly dont like it when i hit the spot, and game simply walks it off while giving me a dirty look.

Had that happen a few times, it was like the scene from Austin powers where he is like “OW! Who uses a shoe anyways?? That really hurt!”
