How loud are PCP pistols compared to something like a HW45/Beeman P1, which are very quite springers? I'm interested in .177 with a velocity around 500 fps.

My pp700sa is much, much louder than my P1. I can shoot the P1 in my yard. With an LDC the pp700sa is at least as quiet as the P1 and definitely backyard friendly as far as sound is concerned.

my Walther LP400 pistol is much louder than my Air Arms Prosport springer although the fpe of the latter is more than double of the former. both are .177 and the pistol produces a cracking sound while the spring makes a "thrump" only.

My IZH 46m is the power output you're asking about, granted it is a single stroke pneumatic rather than a true PCP. It is very very quiet. Just a little click-puff kind of thing. Most PCPs sound much louder indoors I should add, because there are walls and surfaces to reflect sound back at you. This does too, but even still it is very quiet and pleasant to shoot.

In general, no. A PCP (or CO2) pistol is not going to be anywhere near as quiet as a springer.
The trick to closing the gap is to get the valve dwell to be super short. A very light hammer such as one made from MDS nylon (molybdenum disulfide impregnated nylon) or PEEK is a good approach.

my Crosman Silhouette 1701P is a very quiet PCP pistol ,very accurate and close to the fps you are looking for.My Diana Bandit PCP .22 is louder,butt may be backyard friendly...The 1701 is as quiet as a springer the Bandit is a little louder,the Bandit is hard to beat for the money,the Crosman is a lot more money.All my CO2 pistols are louder than those two PCP pistols and louder than my springers.

Pcp airguns use a high pressure short sharp blast of air to propel the pellet so the muzzle report is going to higher than a slow soft push from a springer. That said, 500fps in .177 is not a lot of power and so would not use a lot of air, a small calibre specific ldc should be more than capable of making the muzzle report quieter that the pellet hitting the target.

1-PP700w.
2-Benjamin Marauder pistol.
And both guns, since they are pcp act alot alike when it comes to the sound they make when shot.
When tuned down to around 550 fps the PP700 is really quiet. But crank it up to over 700 fps and she barks pretty good.
The Marauder pistol follows suit as well. Back off the adjustments and get those .22 14.3 grains below 600 fps and it's so quiet you can hear the hammer hitting
the valve and then the sound of the pellet hitting your target. Crank those adjustments up to 700 fps with the same 14.3 grain pellet and backyard friendly she ain't. Unless you have a "really" big back yard.
