PCP Air Rifles and Accuracy

So after 1 year in the PCP air rifle game. I have 9 air rifles 5 fx's and 3 semi auto's, and a tac 2 Vulcan. The real facts are that every one of them shoots a ragged hole group, and rarely if ever throws out a shot. The semi autos one hole groups are a little more ragged and slightly larger but for all practical purposes are very accurate. So today I shot damaged .17, 22, 25, and 30 cal pellets all JSB. These pellets had been stepped on dropped, but were damaged enough that I thought they would not group.

My surprise is that they shot almost identically with the undamaged pellets. These were shot of the bench at 60yds. I only mention this to remark how remarkably accurate our PCP guns are. In reviewing the posts here on new guns and their accuracy it just confirms the above. All these rifles or at least the large majority are capable of ragged holes at 60yds.

The only variable for me was the weight of the JSB. Our hobby with air rifles has achieved and amazing degree of excellence in delivering a very precise product regardless of the manufacturer.

The nuances are the trigger and weight, and general feel of the gun but basic accuracy seems to be a constant. I do have a couple of favorites but that is subjective.

Just wondered if anyone else had shot damaged pellets, with the same results.

Hi Dennis,

Yes Dennis many of the skirts were way out of round. I assume the high pressure took care of that because they shot incredibly well. I am not advocating the use of damaged pellets, but just an observation that surprised me. I know the lengths that some go through to weigh and check diameters, etc. for accuracy. So I was surprised at how well they shot. I was careful to be sure there was not dirt on them.

Excellent post! If they fit in the mag. they go down range, I never did a formal test but I must agree damaged ones work for me too. Nine PCP's in one year, I though four (FX's) was bad, I agree also the way these PCP's shoot is very satisfying. OK all the "hype" I've been hearing about the Taipan Veterans reminds me why I got my first FX Wildcat, "rave reviews" I have my eye on the .22 long, I couldn't be happier with my Wildcats are the Taipan Veterans worthy of the hype? I love the clean uncluttered looks and just haven't heard of problems with 'em give me some help here, have room in the budget for one more, (this year).

Are they worthy of the hype? I'd say so, anytime you can search the net and not find complaints about an item, it's usually a good thing. I love mine, they are the best you can get for the money in my opinion.
